Re: Steam for linux: Beta on Ubuntu 12.04 I'm finding the library of games to be a bit lackluster, considering how many games are on Desura and the fact that Gameolith has more titles then Steam.
If they can get the back catalog by the time they go live and start getting all the old games that work in DOSBox on there maybe they can get more traction, till then the in house titles are the only reason to bother. |

1 edit | reply to Snakeoil Anyone have a link, or know the requirements to get something like TFC2 going? Specifically video drivers. I'm currently running 64bit distro with nvidia GPU & nouveau drivers. *EDIT* NM, I see there's a linux forum at steam. -- ~ Project Hope ~ |

I just installed Steam Beta on Fedora 17 x86_64. I used a Steam repo created by Tom 'spot' Callaway linked here:
»spot.fedorapeople.org/steam/
Seems to be working fine, although download speeds seem to be currently terrible. I'm guessing the Linux mirrors are not as robust as the Windows and Mac mirrors yet. As soon as Team Fortress 2 completes downloading I'll give it a spin and report back. -- Verizon FiOS subscriber since 2005 | Mac owner since 1990 | Fedora user since 2006 | CentOS user since 2007 | "Anyone who is unwilling to learn is entitled to absolutely nothing." - graysonf | EDIT: I seldom post without an edit. |

 | reply to Snakeoil I Finally got it installed onto one of my linux computers .. (here at work).. installed TFC2.. but i got one of those wonderful errors about video drivers.. Now hunting for the 304.48 video driver on this older card and see if i can get the game up and running.. If it works, i've got a lot of work to do this long weekend at my house.. Installing U:12.04.. upgrading my system and then installing Steam..
Hopefully it will all work and i will be playing games on Saturday afternoon.. -- Aelingil: I need to waste my time, my clients time and another techs time, just to fix a problem with you server & filters? Tech Joseph: Yes, you are correct.

 | Yeah i upgraded to the 304 "Experimental Drivers" but it is not the most up to date version that Steam wants. I think i found them i just need to download & setup the drivers when i dont have 10 other things on this computer :\ |

 | Doubt everything that is on Steam will be released to the Linux client since most doesn't even work on Wine.
But if they can get everything that has already been released on Linux: the Valve back catalog
Everything that works in DOSBox
What can be natively ported that has already had it's game engine ported they would be in pretty good shape with a mix of new and old games.
If Valve partners with the Wine team then we may see more working pseudo-ports as well.
Either way, the more games the more users buying them, the larger the surface area for Linux and thus the more likely we see more native ports of new games. Native ports being the ideal if they are actually going to make a console and have it based on Linux. |
|
 | I guess the port of Square Enix's The Last Remnant will never happen, but it can be playable in Wine if not for fullscreen gaming. |

I can see a lot of stuff coming to linux, sure not everything, but eventually most of that will work in wine. I would love if valve helped the wine team, that would be perfect. |

for some reason there is something different about them from other game companies, even other DDers for games. |

Does gog hold the rights to the games? or are they just reselling the games? Their license may allow them to configure the game to work with dosbox, and not much else [if they even configure the game].
Or are the games gog sells considered abandon ware? Meaning the publisher walked away from it, as well as the developers.
I've always been curious as to the rules when it comes to abandon ware. -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? Or is he a failure for trying, and not succeeding at what he is attempting to do? What did you fail at today?. |
