New hard drive in laptop - DSL speed in the toilet.

Hi folks: I replaced the hard drive in my Dell laptop, which is connected by ethernet to my desktop PC. ISP is Frontier.

Desktop: 3264 K/bps down 733 K/bps up

Laptop: 294 K/bps down 702 K/bps up (294 is correct)

Running WinXP SP3; what's going on and what do I need to check?

Thanks in advance. Fritz

How did it perform prior to the HD replacement? Did you do an exact replacement on the HD?

No exact replacement. Went from a 30 to 120 gb HD. Clean install of XP, did the updates, started reinstalling apps. Ran fine before, switch, speedwise.

One bizarre thing I noticed: now on the laptop, when I open My Network Places I get a list of shared folders on the *desktop* PC, instead of the usual list: add Network Place, Network Setup Wizard, etc. I don't know *what* that is but I'm guessing it's not helping the situation.

(If this is in fact a network problem, my apologies for posting here.)

For kicks and giggles run the tweaktest on this site and see what it tells you. And make changes it suggests?

Also what speeds do you get by connecting directly to the modem with the laptop?

Is the new HD a different speed i.e. 7200 to 5400 (or lower)? Have you cleaned temp files, and defragged the drive?

Try downloading an actual file from somewhere, see if it agrees. Speedtests are notorious for being wrong - many things can affect what they display.

I would do that before spending time on anything else.

need to run drtcp, its in the tools section..

for 3mb dsl a RWIN of 128000 should be plenty.. set your MTU to 1490
