AT&T online speedtest vs others ... why is it faster?

Why does the AT&T online speedtest seem to report faster than others (including DSL Reports)?

heh, according to that site I have a 4.12/4.8 Mbps connection with Comcast

Speedtest.net reports ~30/6. Maybe it just favors AT&T Uverse..

speedtest.net says 9.74/1.45
at&t says 14.01/1.43
dsl reports JAVA says 7.30/1.43 (7474/1461)
I just find it kind of odd. All three tests were taken back to back.

I was just looking at dslreports speed test results and suprise, many California lightspeed.~.sbcglobal.net users seem to have the same 11.1 download speed. Who needs throttling when they do it from the getgo!

U-verse 24/3 here. Both tests are consistent for me.

That being said, speed tests are pretty pointless. They don't always necessarily reflect real-world performance, especially on cable connections with PowerBoost.

Because you are on the same network as the test server? I tried it ...

What AT&T thinks.

... but it seriously under reports my speed. It used to over report my upload when I was with AT&T.

There's nothing to not trust. It's simple networking. Connections within AT&T's network will generally be faster and more reliable than connections outside of AT&T's network. You're still limited by the sync rate of your modem.

Most ISPs have their own speed tests that are on their internal network. They're not trying to pull a fast one on you.

Well, for starters, the AT&T speedtest is sitting on the AT&T network, so you can hit it before you hit the internet. All other speed tests are hosted in commercial datacenters, off the AT&T network. That makes those speedtests a lot more reliable, as you want to know how you connect to various internet hosts, not how you connect to AT&T internally.

Except if you have a speed issue and it is outside the att network, they wont/cant help you. On the other hand if you use the att speedtest and you have a speed issue, you can use that test to show the problem is on att's side and get them to look at it. Anyone that tells me they have a poor speed and they are testing across the net, I tell them to ask the net to fix it for them.
