Some more CCAP news today:

Cisco Extends Bridge to CCAP
By Jeff Baumgartner, Light Reading Cable - December 12, 2012
»www.lightreading.com/document.as···lr_cable

On Wednesday, the company launched two capacity-boosting cards -- the Performance Routing Engine (PRE5) and the 3-Gigabit Shared Port Adapter (3GSPA) -- made to snap into its widely deployed flagship CMTS, the uBR10K. They'll act as an intermediate step toward CCAP, an architecture meant to help cable unify all services, including video, under IP.
:
Cisco says trials are planned with "several major" cable operators in the U.S. and abroad starting in the first quarter of 2013. Cisco didn't name them, but Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable Inc., two of Cisco's key customers, are expected to be among the first MSOs to test and deploy CCAP.

Comcast has already issued a CCAP request for proposal (RFP) and has said it will begin some initial deployments this year. More details about that could emerge today at noon E.T. during a Light Reading Cable webinar sponsored by Cisco that will feature John Mattson, Cisco's senior director of strategic marketing, and Jorge Salinger, Comcast's VP of access architecture.

Since Comcast is a known buyer of ARRIS and Cisco, do you think they would even bother buying from Casa or stick with what they know and wait for ARRIS and Cisco to roll out.

Also, with all the equipment out their, wouldn't it be smarter to choose one manufacturer for everything?

IDK, as was stated in this article »www.lightreading.com/head-ends/w···40144661 about Comcast's CCAP operational-readiness trial:
quote:
"To get ready for some small-scale deployments in 2013 and a broader rollout in 2014, Comcast conducted a six-month CCAP operational-readiness trial earlier this year with Cisco Systems Inc. and another vendor that the operator has yet to disclose.

It's dangerous to put all of your eggs in one basket.

Most service providers use at least 2 suppliers for their network equipment, in case something should happen to one of them, and also to bid one against the other for price.

I'm reading through things now. Wonder what this CCAP thing means for customers like us? Quicker speed rollouts, better reliability? I'd probably switch back to Comcast TV if they didn't take years to roll out new boxes, guide updates, etc.

And yeah, I could understand about not putting all your eggs in one basket, but you gotta wonder that they'd have planned for problems and ways to prevent them? (Or were you talking about one getting bought out?) The bidding war, I can also understand. Everyone wants your business and the best pricing, eh?

@comcast.net

While this is impressive it means nothing to me and you in the real world.

That is a short distance, no load, not shared test...

Many areas have 50-70+ homes on one feed. Even if you can say that sucker could do 5Gbps. Say, 30 users out of the 70+ get your faster plans. Not enough exists for everyone still :P

CableLabs ultra-broadband demo at the Cable Show

Some details on the CableLabs HFC DOCSIS ultra-broadband HSI demo at the Cable Show:

Cable Show: CableLabs Kicks Tires on Ultra HD
Industry's R&D consortium also demos next-generation cable modem tech running at up to 6 Gbps

By Todd Spangler, Variety - June 11, 2013
»variety.com/2013/digital/news/ca···0495345/
quote:
In addition, CableLabs is staging two broadband demos, one showing up to 6 gigabit per second download speeds—delivered over coaxial cable. The industry has maintained that it doesn’t need an expensive fiber-to-the-home buildout, like the networks Google Fiber is deploying, to deliver very high Internet connections.

However, to achieve the speeds, the cable modems would consume the bulk of the spectrum on a typical cable system.

In the first demo, a cable modem based on the current DOCSIS 3.0 spec is delivering 4.6 gigabits per second over 768 MHz. The other demo uses the still-in-development DOCSIS 3.1 specification, with silicon from Broadcom, to deliver 6 Gbps in 750 MHz.

“This is dispelling the question, ‘Is DOCSIS 3.1 real?’” said McKinney, formerly CTO of HP’s Personal Systems division who joined CableLabs last year.

Chipsets for DOCSIS 3.1 are expected in early 2014, with products ready for cable operators to roll out starting in 2015, according to CableLabs.

More information on how the Gigabit speeds were achieved with DOCSIS equipment:

Cable Show: Gigabit DOCSIS? Yeah, we can do that
By Brian Santo, CED Magazine - June 11, 2013
»www.cedmagazine.com/news/2013/06···-do-that

quote:
In the 3.0 demo, CableLabs was bonding 128 channels (using four 32-channel cable modems) to crank out in excess of 4 Gbps in a total of 768 MHz. Gigabits, unequivocally, yes.

The 3.1 specification is far from done, but it is certain the spec will include OFDM modulation and LDPC error correction. So in a demo that relied on those two technologies, CableLabs was pushing data at a clip in excess of 6 Gbps, but in only 650 MHz, the better to show the spectral efficiency inherent in the move to OFDM.
