1 edit | Overfilled the oil and some dripped 2001 Ford Ranger 2.5L engine. Just drove around town a little and then bought a quart of oil since I knew I was a bit low. Engine felt warm but not burning so I was still able to put the oil in.
1. The dip stick showed in between min and max. I added 60% of a quart into where the oil goes. It did not spill out of there, but it was almost up to the top. When I checked the dip stick, it showed the oil went past max. Am I ok as long as it didn't over flow when I was pouring the oil in?
2. When I checked again, a drop of oil fell off the dip stick and onto the "thing" to the left of where the dip stick goes. It looks like a metal M and I see a vaccuum line goes into it. Only a drip of oil is on it. Will that crack it or cause damage? What should I do? I tried using a dry paper towel and it didn't soak anything off.
Too lazy to take a pic, so I grabbed one off Google and circled what I dripped a drop of oil on. You'll see how the dipstick in the picture is next to it.
3. I also did not use a funnel when pouring the oil in and missed a little bit, but it fell next to the hole that I pour the oil in. I wiped it up but the area looks a little "wet". Is that ok? I see it looks a little dirty and stuff around the sides of where the oil goes, so I'm sure this wasn't the first time that it's happened. |

kudos:2 | Your only true concern here is, how far the oil level went past the cross hatch. A millimeter or 2, you're ok. Past that and I'd drain a bit. You can do it cold for this one.

Look Outside | I'll check again tomorrow when it's lighter out so I can see what I'm doing. It looked past maximum when I pulled it out.
Is what I circled the engine? Is the oil drop on it ok?
I don't know how to drain the oil out. Can I buy something that looks like an eye dropper and suck some out of where I put it in? I'll drive my other car to go buy one, if needed. |

Drop spilled shouldn't hurt anything, if you think you might have spilled more than that it might be a good idea to clean it with carb cleaner (with a cold engine), then let it warm up with the hood open to make sure nothing is burning.

No because the oil sits deep into the oil pan, the only way to "suck out" would be with a long hose down the dip stick tube. Better off loosening the drain bolt, but only if significantly over filled, a little over the hatch should be OK.

What you circled looks to be the intake manifold. You're ok, just wipe it off.
I would suggest taking it to an oil change place to drain any excessive oil. An eye dropper won't do as the oil is at the bottom of the engine in the oil pan.

kudos:2 | Did you pour it in the engine, or the thin little tube at the back of the engine?
If it's the thin tube, that's the transmission fill tube. Do not drive it! Tow it to a shop, and explain what you did.

Also another thing, I notice I get oil streaking on the dip stick sometimes, making it hard to read how much oil is in there. I made a picture as an example. Any way to solve this? |

kudos:2 | No, it's just splash on the stick. Allow a few hours to drain from the tube. Like when it's cold.
Draw the dipstick, wipe, re-insert, pull it out and look at the results.

I think you are being paranoid. Both our cars take 5 quarts and I buy oil in a 5.1 liter bottle.
After I change the oil in both our cars the oil level is 1/4 inch above the full mark. I never give it a second thought.
The five liter bottle is a pain in the ass. If I spill a drop or two, wipe it off as best as you can and forget about it. |

Opened the screw on lid for where one pours the oil. I still saw oil there. I measured the dip stick and it showed right below max. I started the truck up and let it run for a few minutes. It now shows a little more than half way between min and max. So that means it was probably less than in the middle yesterday, and I incorrectly measured it, right? |

New Jersey | Wait a few minutes after shutting off the engine before you measure the oil. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, then remove it again and look at the level. If it's between min and max, there's no need to add oil. |

For future reference, the difference between the add and full marks are generally 1 quart. So, if the oil level is right on the "add" or the bottom of the hash marks, 1 full quart should put it right on the "full" mark or the top of the hash marks. If it is half way between the full and add marks, 1/2 a quart should bring it to the full mark.
