Camera for Outdoor Video

I hope this is the right place. I am looking for a video camera that is the next step up from the family camcorder. I guess that would mean amature or semi-pro? We do a LOT of outdoor activities and am hoping to find something that I don't have to worry about getting bumped around every once in a while. Like when we go to the sand dunes I wont have to freak out about sand getting in it. Or rock climbing I can take it up with me to get some shots. Or if it gets a little water on it I won't have to worry about wiping it off (can continue filming and get it off later). Hopefully not really expensive but I am willing to pay a few pennies for it as it will be a long term purchase. Any ideas? I really have no idea where to start.
