I can't even run a shaperprobe. And this is bizarre. My connection appears to "die". So I watched systat -ifstat output, and this is what it reports (emphasis mine):

How the heck am I getting 7 MEGABYTES per second uploads? This is truly bizarre. I captured during this, going to check the IO graph now.

*edit* pcap shows 7 MB/s uploads. If only I could figure out how shaper probe is managing that. :p 50+ Mbps uploads would be sweet. Although by the looks of the pcap, it's just sending UDP packets as fast as it can, so it's not actually that much throughput through the modem I'm sure.

How are you graphing upload speeds? Is this capture during a shaperprobe or are you manually uploading content somewhere?

Thanks appreciate it! I've been doing the following:

as root: tcpdump -i em0 -w speed.pcap host 204.152.184.73
as user: wget »ftp://freebsd.isc.org/pub/FreeBSD/ISO-···vefs.iso

Then I open up speed.pcap in wireshark, then click the Statistics menu and then IO graph (thanks espaeth for the info on IO graph, it's much better than the tcp throughput graph).

From there, to get those 3 10s groups of images, I set:

X axis tick interval: 0.01s
X axis pixels per tick: 1
Y axis units: Bytes/tick

Then you can scroll left/right to see a zoomed in view of the traffic. In my cast right around 23.5 seconds in, speeds fall off then go into their sawtooth pattern. Your duration of PB may vary of course :)

Yes, it affects latency sensitive applications (e.g. working remotely over VPN to a VNC session).

But more to the point - it's just plain broken. If this is "ok" and Comcast has no plans to fix it, we need to know ASAP, because, at least for me, I would look into either downgrading my speeds or seeking alternatives to the service (without an ETF).

Sure, but the average overall speed is fine. The speeds just bounce constantly between like 5MB/s (way above subscribed rate) and then down below 2MB/s (TCP stack reacting to packet loss).

It's clearly not being shaped properly after PB.

Mine are on 15/3 with the SMCd3 modem. PB seems to be there too (about 25/5 with PB dropping to 15/3 after.... steady full speed after PB either up or down.)

Actually, I did the leg work for myself, not for you. I find that it is usually quite helpful to read the contract, TOS, AUP, etc before signing up for a service, rather than afterward. I also never pay any attention to anything that a salesperson tells me; their job security requires them to lie (and even the occasional salesperson who doesn't outright lie, most often hasn't a clue as to what they are actually selling).

And if you look at the Business Class marketing site (and your contract), you will see that the name of the second tier business class service is "Preferred", not "Ultra"; the "Ultra" name is a residential class service (which should provide a clue that what your bill calls your service is irrelevant). FWIW, the wording on my bill is "Internet Service Performance" instead of the proper name of "Starter" (and Business Class is mentioned nowhere on the bill).

For me, my issue is the erratic speeds after PB. I am hoping they fix it, because if they don't and the slower speed tiers DO work properly without the erratic speeds, I will probably save myself a few $ and drop my speeds, and if they try to charge me for it, I believe I will have a case for reducing my speed plan with no penalty. Not sure they'll agree since my "average speed" is near 27 Mbps, though. :huh:

The contract that I signed made no mention of PowerBoost at all, much less some specific level of PowerBoost. It only specified that I was ordering the "Starter" Business Class Internet Service. I am not saying that you don't have some special handwritten contract (or a handwritten addendum to the standard contract), but the marketing information on the business class web site and/or the spoken words of a Comcast salesperson are not considered to be part of the contract.

Shown below is the page from my contract that shows what services I ordered, and I really don't see any mention of PowerBoost anywhere on that page (or any other page).

I was working with a CC rep via IM here and I think they believe everything is still OK. In the last IM I sent, I asked for someone to confirm or deny whether PB had been taken away. Of course, no reply on that one.

The average throughput is great, but it's erratic and means if something is downloading my interactive work remotely/etc will suffer. I fiddled with ipfw to shape, but while it helps a little bit, it's still not a /----- kind of graph, it's still erratic.

pflog, you would love my new setup. Looks like I am now hard coded for 30/7 with NO powerboost.

About time to get on my reps A$$ and see when they are going to get this fixed. At least MY original package and contract had powerboost in it so to me, this is a breach as they cannot seem to get it fixed! I know I might be jumping the gun, but I am about tired of companies such as this on Business class connections making changes with NO notification that interrupts normal service.
