domain parking?

What is this about, and is it okay?

Sedoparking comes up a lot recently in a typo error - what is this?

Earn money off domain parking?

There are people that make a living parking domain names. The biggest players register and park several thousand names a month, in the hopes that someone will want to purchase at least a few of them. At inflated prices, of course! The highest payoff I've read about was when sex.com was auctioned off for a million dollars. o:

Seems fair enough, but not a security problem as such.

Sounds like it's worth adding it to the hosts file for now.

I don't get the whole domain-parking argument.
I have registered a few domains that are variants of mine and my kids' names. I have no website, nor traffic for these domains.
They are for them to use when they get older.
Is there some protocol at play to be considered a domain-parker, or am I a scum bag?

EUS, while what you are doing is technically domain parking it's not what's typically refer to when talking about the subject. A good example of people abusing the system would be for someone to take the names of the top 50 democratic and republican contenders for president in 2016 and register many variations of those names! They're hoping that the campaigns would pay them big money to use those domain names.

It depends on how much you plan to charge your kids for the domain names

An example of domain parking for $$$
I register phoofoobitz.net today. Tomorrow a parker-bot registers phoofoobitz.com Next year when I determine I'd get a lot more hits with .com than with .net I'd need to pay bucks to the parker to get it.

In other venues, the process might be called arbitrage, with the hoped-for price difference occurring over time (and events). But then, one man's concept of "arbitrage" constitutes another man's concept of "profiteering" or another man's concept of "scum bagging".

Sex.com was a high level TLD that was parked for years. Good example of how a domain squatter registers a TLD, sits on it until someone wants to register the domain, finds it's taken and has to pay $20 Mil to get it.
