Electronic Box Cable 30 Low Download Speed

Hi,

We just moved to a new apartment in downtown Montreal, and I subscribed to ElectronicBox based on the positive feedback on various websites.

We subscribed to the 30mbps cable service, and it got installed 4 days ago. When the connection went live, I ran speed tests on several devices around my home. My iPad seems to be getting the highest speed (30mbps) while my laptop hovers around 20mbps-25mbps.

The problem is that the actual download speed is nowhere near 30mbps. I tried downloading files from various websites, and the download rate was only around 200-250 KB/s. For instance, downloading the iOS 6 iPad firmware (1.1GB) took just over an hour.

I'm getting similarly slow download speeds from Adobe, TED, Youtube, and various other websites. So this has nothing to do with Apple's servers.

The weird thing is the speedtest.net test is giving me much higher speed than my actual download speed. What could possibly be causing this?

Download from Nvidia or AMD... those sites are usually really fast. Or even Microsoft.

Same results, in the 200-250 KB/s range.

have you tried to connect your laptop directly to the router/modem instead of using wifi ? i have a laptop here with an old 802.11b/g card and it gets 18mbps max, the bottleneck can be your wireless card.

Nvidia is slow here too. it's not you.

My speed test is normal. So it's not Ebox.

I don't have my full 60Mbps tonight, between 28-35 Mbps, but nothing like 200KBps..

If the speedtest shows 30 Mbps then the problem is past Ebox. Don't forget, many websites will limit their upload speed (your download) for each connection.

Also, if iOS 6 for example is a new update, it is possible that too many people are connected. When it was released, I'm sure millions connected at the same time and nobody got full speed. You can try downloading a popular torrent to see how fast it will get.

Last thing, make sure your wireless connection is protected, maybe a neighbour is stealing your bandwidth.

Ever since moving to ebox, all my downloads from apple (software updates, itunes, etc...) have been super slow. Not sure why, but I don't use my mac too often so I don't really care.

maybe it's the route. Can someone at Ebox check the route ?

here is what happen with the looking glass :

xe-2-2-0.cr1.sjc2.us.above.net 0.0% 5 118.9 88.1 80.3 118.9 17.2
xe-1-1-0.er1.sjc2.us.above.net 0.0% 5 80.2 85.0 80.2 102.3 9.6
125.71.22.t01403-01.above.net 0.0% 5 84.4 103.3 82.2 185.0 45.

Pings are high. Les pings sont très haut. ya pas de loss mais c'Est pas très bon.

I'm starting to notice high pings on a lot of servers...nvidia gets me an average or 85 ms, google.ca gives me around 44 ms, facebook around 87 ms...

it gets quite annoying when i want to load a page and it takes a while to respond...

My pings with Videotron were A LOT better and this is probably the only complaint i have about ebox! I sure hope they find a better way to route our traffic, because at one point this will be irritating and i'll start complaining a lot :P

I don't know what it could be related to...i doubt it's a traffic overload because even after midnight i get the same results

post some traceroute and MTR, maybe they can work on some rerouting/optimisation

Here are two traceroutes, first google.com and second google.ca. They use different routes and oddly enough, google.ca takes (a lot) longer. It definitely shows in the ping (google.com gives around 19 ms whereas google.ca gives around 44 ms)

sadly, EBox can not do anything about this.
I'm getting similare results with Maskatel in St-Hyacinthe... and they are not using the same providers as EBox... they are using Bell and Videotron.

Those high ping times start well outside EBox network... I'm not even sure if nlayer, peer1 or any providers that they are using would be able to "fix" this as te problem starts well outside of their network too.

Is it accurate to say that Videotron has better ping times simply because of the number of peers (real peer1 peers) that they are using?

Since my transfer to Ebox, I have been enjoying great download speeds, but online gaming has suffered and that is why I will probably transfer back.

The number of peer does not equal to lower ping although it is a factor it is not the unique factor.

BGP-4 select the best path based on network proximity and not latency. The proximity is based on the number of AS between the origin network and the remote network.

You have various mechanism (prepending) to force routes to use a given path instead of the default one selected by BGP-4.

In the spotlight Ebox is going to add a tier-1 carrier on November 1st so AS distance should be shorter to some destination as our upstream host a lot of gaming/content provider due to low cost.

Also we are supposed to have an internet exchange eventually in Montreal so this will be even better to reach popular local destination.

So I should expect better latencies in November?

That would be really nice!

As for the montreal exchange, would that actually ever happen? If so, who builds it? What's the companies behind these exchanges?
