 | Switching Router From DSL to Cable A week from today I will have Start through Cogeco. I am on DSL with Teksavvy at the moment and have been on DSL for quite a few yrs and actually forget how to switch it over to Cable.
I have a Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato
I have 2 laptops and a bunch of wireless stuff like PS3/Xbox360/Cell Phones, etc, but nothing hardwired. Why I bring this up is because my understanding is that I need to clone a MAC address for cable and that device should be hardwired. Is this still the case?
Any directions on how to go from DSL to Cable through Tomato would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks |

| reply to kcorscadden To set up all you will need to do is switch the connection type under the WAN / Internet settings section from PPPoE to DHCP (Dynamic). Been a while since I used Tomato but should look like this: »www.polarcloud.com/img/ssbn100.png
Note that you will not be able to make use of the 30 Mbit speeds over wireless-g. While G is theoretically 54 Mbps the max throughput you will actually see is something closer to 22 Mbps. Even hardwired you may not see full speed. At 30 Mbps you are starting to push the dated CPU in the WRT54G to its limit. |

I had a feeling the WRT54GL would have issues with the 30Mbps. I guess I am upgrading.... Any recommendations?
I hear the Asus RT-N16 is pretty good |

But I recommend E4200 V2, Asus N66U
With higher speeds, you want a router that's not going to bottleneck with the speeds. |

I heard the Linksys and Asus firmware is brutal |

|
 | Hmmmm I don't see the N66U listed on Tomato's website
»tomatousb.org/doc:build-types
I'll have to look into this further |

| I just googled it and it does support tomatoUSB. »www.shadowandy.net/2012/03/asus-···uide.htm
I think the table is out of date. |

| You'd probably want something like Toastman's modification of Tomato USB: »toastmanfirmware.yolasite.com/
Lots of info on anything tomato: »www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?fo···ware.33/
Maybe check out the N66U forum on smallnetbuilder: »www.smallnetbuilder.com/forums/f···php?f=40
With the recent Staples $50 off $150 coupon (that recently expired), a lot of us were able to get a pricematch for the N66U router at around $106 or $111 (depending on if a certain pricematch was successful). Cheapest you can get an N66U for now is $156.50 (directcanada.com).
There is a deal for the Linksys E4200 at NCIX for $69.99, but do note it's refurbished. Not sure if it's the v1 or v2 (i think it's the v1, but not exactly sure): »www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=73594
It's a very good router, but from what i've read, the N66U has better wireless range, especially on the 5 Ghz band. |

 | Ya I had a $50 off $150 coupon, but couldn't think of anything to buy.... GRRRRRR
I am also aware of the refurb of the e4200 that is on RFD right now
Thanks |

quick search on shopbot.ca and find the lowest price, go to any staples and price match. |

It's really a matter of "Am I willing to spend that much of the N66U, or just buy the RT-N16"? Problem with the N16 is that it doesn't have a 5 Ghz band. I don't know if you do HD streaming, but i guess there's a possibility for HD streaming to stutter on the 2.4 Ghz band ? (i'm talking about if you're streaming a high bitrate (1080p for example) movie from a NAS). It's possible that the N16 would be good enough for you. Personally if it was me, i'd go for an N66U, but prices will drop even further eventually (look for those RFD deals ), but i guess you need a router now. |

I am not in a hurry to get one yet, just won't be able to get my 30 Mbps on it.
The N66U is definitely on my list. Now hopefully Staples does another $50 off $150 again |
