dvd help.

I have a friend who has over 150 old WW11 movies(black and white) he recorded on an Insignia dvd player. He used dvd-r discs to burn them. That dvd player went caput and has been discontinued. It was sold at Best Buy. He bought a new dvd player but it won't play the discs. He took a couple discs to Best Buys geek squad to see what's up and he said they can't determine the format. They won't even be seen in a computer. Any ideas would be appreciated. Hope this makes sense.

Some one gave him a call that is a whiz at that and said something about some software to reformat and reburn them. They weren't finalized correctly by the original player he said. That's all I know atm. Thanks.
