Unfortunately that practice is becoming standard in recent years. It took 802.11n years before being ratified leading to draft N hardware being de facto standards (basically installed in every Wifi enabled device) in the market. There's no way to avoid it, draft 802.11ac products will be everywhere before it's ratified. Blame it on the hardware manufacturers that want an edge in getter "faster" gear out to market regardless on the effect on actual performance and future compatibility.
