 | telus optik high speed - dynamic ip question hi there, does anyone know how often telus changes the dynamic IP address (public) for their Optik high speed internet service (residential). Or does it only really change if i reboot the router or do a release/renew? Or do they just change the ip all the time and if so, what frequency? like once a month? or like daily? I need to have a relatively stable dynamic public IP, which i have now with shaw... shaw only changes it if i renew or reboot the router pretty much.. Telus first told me it was like that, then they put me on hold, came back and said "no, actually it renews a lot, you'd need a business plan"... thanks for the help! |

Now if you are running a server, you may run into problems on Telus as there are a list of ports that are blocked. |

 | reply to angelyssa thanks Mike! Do you think it would change daily though? because if it changes monthly, then no big deal... but it would be rather annoying if it changed daily, or weekly...
I don't run a server at all... the reason for needing it is for ME to connect to a server hosted elsewhere, which is IP restricted.. and also some web pages which are also IP restricted.. so I have to give my IP address to my admin, so he adds it to those records... but if I have to give him a new IP like daily, or weekly, it will be a hassle right.. so I'd rather avoid that...
Will DynDNS work for me in this case, and give me a static public IP? i am not sure how that service works... i don't need a DynDNS URL.. not sure what you mean by that... I need an IP, that i can give my admin, so that only my IP can connect by FTP or whatever, to my company's servers... thanks for the reply! |

 | No, in this case DynDNS wouldn't work for you, as it's only for mapping a name to a dynamic IP for in-bound traffic.
I can tell you that my IP at home hasn't changed since the service was installed in July, but your mileage may vary. |
