I just moved into a new apartment and my internet options were pretty limited (Orlando, FL). Came down to either brighthouse or centurylink DSL, went with CLink as it's $30 a month for a 10mbps connection as opposed to brighthouse's $54. I didn't like the fees associated with using their modem/router though, so it's time to pick up the basics of home networking.
The plan is to have 1 computer hooked up directly via ethernet cable, and 1 laptop (and a Playstation 3) accessing via wireless. I'm trying to find the most cost friendly method of accomplishing this. Can I get any advice on what exactly to look for? Should I get a modem AND a router or just get a modem with wireless capabilities? Are there any particular modems and/or routers that are recommended for those of us on a budget?
See if your local BestBuy carries the Actiontec C1000A modem in the CenturyLink packaging. Here they are $99. It is VDSL and ADSL compatible. It has a router and wireless built-in.
I use mine in bridge mode (router and wireless disabled) as I have a separate router and wireless access points that I use. I get better line stats with the new modem than I did with the older Actiontec unit that it replaced.
