Removing a 15 pin chip

SMD or thru hole and do you want to save the chip?

Suck the solder and remove the chip?

If normal removal doesn't work SNIP and PULL. Cut the pins and remove one at a time. Then you'll probably have to clean out the hole.

Hopefully it wont be hard I just never had one in this pin configuration before.

I've done what SparkChaser suggests many times.
Clip the leads off at the IC body with a good pair of cutters, then heat the lead and pull it out.
One other thing I do to get nice clean holes, is to add a bit of solder to the now empty hole, and then wick it off with solder wick.
And then I clean both sides of the board with Isopropyl Alcohol.

I've done that before a little tricky at first.. on a board I did not care about I used a propane torch.. I kept it away enough where it did not overheat.. it was super easy to remove a cpu socket

If you can't suction old solder, melt new solder in the old joint. Then try the braid or the pump.

My braid is almost gone.. Speaking of that which braid works best? I had the radio shack brand and it has mixed reviews, for me it does not start wicking unless I put some solder on it and use my 40W iron.

"Solder Wick" brand from Mouser or DigiKey.

The RS one is probably OK, but probably sat on a shelf too long and is a bit tarnished.

I keep liquid flux when i use mine, it works much better.

I never used liquid flux, not too long ago my late uncle had a whole can of paste flux and that stuff makes doing wires less of an hassle.
Hopefully by Tuesday I will have power back at least that's what the power company said..

I know the other way I did was use a torch but it was on a motherboard I no longer needed, I held the tip about 10 inches away and they came off smooth but might too risky for something that still works.

If it is a can of paste flux, it may have been for plumbing. That would be acid flux and would eat up thin traces.

I used it to clean my soldering iron tips. They soon eroded away.

I've used the braid from coax, along with a bit of liquid flux, when I didn't have any "real" solder wick handy.

Hmm so should I stop using this paste flux? I will have to get more braid when stuff is back and running right.

*I* wouldn't use it, and I've been known to try some pretty bizarre thinks in an emergency!

Radio Shack should have flux. Are they open yet in your area?

BTW....how'd you do when Sandy hit? I forgot you lived up there or I would have PM'd you about it.
