From what I read line voltage I think hits the chip, I know very little about this audio chip I just know from searching it's used in a lot of amps..

One thing I don't know much about or can't find much info.. say a chip is oscillating how long does it take to overheat?

Depends on what frequency and amplitude the frequency of oscillation is.

Could run forever, could go POOF! in seconds.
