Ehecatl join:2012-10-25 Long Beach, CA | What is included with a DSLExtreme 3000/768Kbps DSL account? I've spend hours searching the DSLExtreme website for details on just what is included in a purchase of a 'Faster: 3000/768Kbps $24.95/mo' DSL package, and what all charges for the account would be. But I haven't been able to find anything.
I wrote sales and asked for a link to a web page with the information and got a reply only saying all plans include Email, Usenet Access, file storage, & personal web space.
I replied thanking for that information, but again asked for a link to where I might be able to read and print out all information about what is included in the purchase of the package. But that wasn't addressed in the reply I got.
Is there no information anywhere on just what is included in the purchase of this service, and what the related charges will be?
Thanks ..E |

With a 3000/768 connection, you're getting downstream bitrate of up to 3000 Kbps, and upstream bitrate of up to 768 Kbps. Exact bitrate will vary based on your physical line conditions (basically, the closer you are to the nearest CO or RT, and the better the quality of your phone lines, the better it is for you), and you'll see some minor fluctuation during normal usage, but generally your bitrate will usually be right up by that max most of the time. If you run a speedtest, you'll usually see about 80% of those numbers on the speedtest result, as explained by this very site: »DSL FAQ »What is the 80% bandwidth / speed
You also get up to 10 email addresses, all using the format "email@dslextreme.com". Your first email address will match your account username, and the others you can pick freely (within reason, obviously you can't take certain reserved or already-taken names).
You get access to tech support. You can call us 24/7 at 866-491-7221. You can also email us or contact us via chat. Also (obviously but unofficially) you can post or send me an IM here, and I can help you this way. Yo!
Those are the primary features of the account. Assuming you qualify for such in your area, the cost is $24.95/mo., plus a $2.88/mo. SSR fee, so your final bill would be $27.83/mo.
You have the option to sign up for a modem lease. Modem leases have a one-time handling fee of $17.72, but do not have any monthly fee. (Basically, it's like buying a modem for $17.72, except we expect you to return it whenever you close out your account with us) If the modem fails during your subscription with us, we will replace it free of charge.
Beyond that, no other charges that I can think of. If we send out an AT&T technician that has to perform repairs to the inner wiring of your building, then AT&T sends us a bill which we pass on to you, but that's not really from us. The other services you mentioned, newsgroup access etc., are all at no additional charge. I'll go ahead and ask the sales dept. if they have anything 'prettier' to give you, but hopefully this reply has answered your main question. Anything in particular you're concerned about? |

Faster: 3.0Mbps 3.0Mbps Download 768Kbps Upload
Our 3.0Mbps package is good for users who have multiple internet connected devices. There is enough download and upload speed for playing games, streaming movies, listening to online music and downloading.
Dynamic PPPoE 1 IP $24.95/mo FREE Modem Lease & Self-Install To view specific packages for your location you will need to pre-qualify first.
I guess you have to fill in the form to see more information

Ehecatl join:2012-10-25 Long Beach, CA | reply to Ehecatl Thanks for your feedback guys. I have entered my address into the DSLExtreme form online, and it showed that I do qualify.
I've had a 1Mbps/300Mbps Verizon DSL account for a few years now and have been paying $30/month, but I''ve never been able to stream HD video. The DSLExtreme 3000/768Kbps package for ~$2/mo less sounds enticing for that very reason. I'm not sure if I now own the Actiontec/Verizon modem/router or not. I'll ask them. Anyone here know anything about that?
Apparently DSLExtreme will automatically switch me from Verizon by specifying that when purchasing the service. Sounds a bit scarey. I've had a lot of nightmare scenarios in the past having to deal with billing & support issues with ISPs. Especially with Verizon and Charter.
The other services you mentioned, newsgroup access etc., are all at no additional charge.
Do you know if there's a list of newsgroups that are included? What kind of transfer rates to expect from a Usenet client? How much personal web space is offered? How much email storage space? How much file storage?
I miss the 'old days' when there were more local ISPs that detailed all those things up front. Seems Verizon, Charter and DSLExtreme are the only ones available to me locally.

Yes

I got to the point where I was asked for my name and a username & password. Any further is just a hassle.
I dunno... Not having all of these things presented up front isn't exactly encouraging confidence in signing up with DSLExtreme. |

 | I think storage is 25MB per each email address you set up. File storage is of a piece with web storage--i.e. web storage *is* file storage.
No idea bout the email storage, since this isn't my primary email provider. |

Re: What is included with a DSLExtreme 3000/768Kbps DSL account? Email storage is 10GB/account, last I checked.
Newsgroup access is provided through Highwinds. I'll confess, I don't really use Usenet myself so I'm not the best qualified to field questions like typical transfer rates; hopefully some of customers that do use such will step in and answer that one.
To be honest, it's not that the site's trying to hide such information, really... it's more that most people don't ask about such usually, so it tries to minimize throwing too much data at people that just want a simple internet connection at a decent price. |

Ehecatl join:2012-10-25 Long Beach, CA | reply to Ehecatl Thanks for that much dslx_nick. As you may have already suspected, I 1st accessed the WWW with Lynx before HTML and Mosaic Spent more time on the Usenet back then than anywhere else. |

 | Very cool--I remember the days before the web, when NNTP, FTP, Telnet, and other even more obscure protocols were the mode (Archie, WAIS, gopher...) |
