Network Naming SchemeHi guys,
I'm just interested what's your naming scheme for your home network?
I'm changing mine to a Star Trek theme. Network Name - The Federation Wired - Main Federation Planets Laptops/Tablets - Maybe Space Stations? Any ideas? Cell Phones - Federation Ships |

Pretty boring here. Don't have a network name, unless you count SSID which is Kilroy. Machines are named user-OS. Comes from doing IT all day. |

Beam me up, Scotty. There's no intelligent life here.
Whatever names the computers come with by default works for me. I get enough of naming conventions foisted on me at work. |

Desktop --> Desktop Laptop --> Laptop File Server --> File Server Printer --> Printer
Me likes to keep it simple. |

If you can remember special names for each device go nuts have fun.
I like to keep it simple and use the device model number. I also have some obvious ones, basement, server, printer... |

At home: descriptor for system combined with name of whomever uses the system most. XPS_Psafux for one of my laptops for example. I also have network address reservation configured on my router. Makes it easy when I dig through network logs.
At work: each device is given a unique 7 digit computer name. 250,000 devices are a little different to keep track of than 12 though. |

Gee, no geeks at heart here? I'm shocked! I named my gear after anime series and characters myself. said by JBear:Laptops/Tablets - Maybe Space Stations? The most talked about but never seen ship in Star Trek lore. Regards |

Network Name - Trinity Site
Wired 1 - Fatman Wired 2 - Littleboy Laptop 1 - BocksCar (it would have a space to be proper but windows is lame and wont allow it) Laptop 2 - Enolagay
I consider my network a nuclear family.... |

I know! That is what I was thinking Hellfire. But I suppose a lot of people here work on business networks where a naming scheme isn't really efficient. I've named my Galaxy SII cell phone the "USS Enterprise" since she was a Galaxy class starship. |

The standard I use for workstations at work is: 2 character BU code followed by two digit year code followed by two digit sequential number. This limits the deployment of no more than 99 computers at this BU per year. We recently adopted a 3 character BU code but there is no compelling reason for me to switch as of yet since there is no ambiguity with my 2 character BU code. Our servers have a much more complex naming convention that I won't bother explaining. |

Easy, I name them after Pokemon.
The best part about that is I can have my DHCP server assign IP addresses that correspond to the Pokemon IDs.
eg: Venusaur -> 192.168.5.3 |

I have always named mine after the game "Descent" objects. For instance, Pyro is my desktop. MatDef is the server for "Material Defender". |

You're either just a kid (relatively speaking), or you have WAY to much interest in Pokemon. I name most of the computers after Star Wars characters. Yoda - WHS Skywalker - My laptop Leia - Wife's laptop Vader - Kids laptop Jabba and Solo - HTPCs R2D2 & C3P0 - Mobile phones I probably should change our printer's name to DotMatrix in homage to Spaceballs, but it's always just been the model MX700. |
