Ugh, this is going to be horrible, even if it isn't as bad as they say. Gas stations will be out of gas, foods stores have no food. What a mess.

Sandy's storm surge is expected to be at least a foot higher than Irene's. If the peak surge arrives near Monday evening's high tide at 9 pm EDT, a portion of New York City's subway system could flood, resulting in billions of dollars in damage. I give a 50% chance that Sandy's storm surge will end up flooding a portion of the New York City subway system.

noon monday forest hills - i just came back from my walkabout to the post office, and it was interesting to see what was open closed etc.

CLOSED: housewares, clothing, office supply, resturant, bakery, coffee, anything that caters to mass transit commuters.

OPEN: major drug store chains, major banks, fast food chains, bagel shops, major grocery chains, fruit/veggie stands

it's just a windy drizzle thus far, so many people are out jogging, getting groceries, and it's like a sunday morning traffic flow. people seem to be in good spirits - we had plenty of notice so whatever we could do has been done already, so for now it's C'est la vie.

Holy Hurricane, the winds just picked up incredibly---we had a short power outage and everything came back, but with winds like this, it's just a matter of time. con Ed says the majority of their customers without power are in Westchester, so I'm not real optimistic.
