Re: She's comingI'd hate to be in lower Manhatten right now. subway and traffic tunnels took in a lot of water and entire city blocks are without power now. that record storm surge was the real story my family by inwood has a lot of street flooding but they are used to that by now. here by me a lot of trees uprooted and are laying about. I'll try to post some pictures once it's daylight. |

Sandy left NYS Capital district with a lot of Tuesday morning hangovers and a very probable baby boom in July.
Many of my Brooklyn and City friends are under water, some lost everything, others have destroyed lobbies, buildings, and are forced to leave while maintenance inspects. So many gas leaks and down power cables, I hope everyone will be ok. |

Tried driving into work to downtown Brooklyn today but both Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges were closed. Even the Third Avenue bridge in the Bronx was closed. Interestingly, by the time I got back home both bridges reopened. I wasn't turning back around, especially since both FDR and West Side highways are still closed, and all of lower Manhattan is still without power. Not fun stopping and going through intersections so I don't get hit.

that's the half circle commuter tunnel that links the west side hwy to the east side fdr drive. if you know where it is and ever drove thru it, you would not be surprised it's underwater. it's basically a tunnel under all the wall street skyscrapers to help reduce cross town traffic. what people forget is the entire battery park area was built as landfill created with all the material the original WTC buildings had to displace back in the 1970's, so it's no wonder it's only a few feet above high tide levels. |

I went through it many times. Not surprised it's flooded...just amazed that it was still completely filled when that photo was taken. |

in a strange way we are lucky that tunnel took in so much water, that would have otherwise have ended up filling more important subway tunnels and building subbasements. my guess is pumping out that tunnel will be low on the city's priority list since all it does is relieve cross town traffic. |

The water of the Atlantic Ocean is infinite relative to the few million gallons of the battery u/p. |

AVD of course, but we are only talking the few hours around high tide where the storm surge was able to flow over battery park into the tunnels, so the water involved was in fact a limited quantity. It's logical that tunnel diverted a lot of floodwater that would have moved further inland and done a lot more damage during the few hours the water was actually flowing in from the bay. |

My sympathies from Connecticut. I'm a lucky one, only a day/day and a half power outage. But there is a heavy tree branch laying on top of my cable drop, don't know when they will get to it... |

Just got power back! |

Power was out from Monday afternoon around 5PM until Tuesday evening (6PM) in my neighborhood. No damage in the immediate area as we're pretty high above sea level, but a lot of the houses have decks that go down to the beaches - many of those are completely gone or seriously damaged.
The lower lying portions of the neighborhood flooded pretty badly. Not sure if their power is still out.
I'm just happy the power came back relatively quickly. I was freaking out when Con-Ed originally said a week+ for aerial power. That's just insane. |

Sorry I did not read this whole thread cause I just have a moment more on this leeched signal - still no power, no heat and little gas here in Ronkonkoma. It is cold today! We are cleaning up the downed trees but also have wires from the cable line on the lawn. What a mess but we went through Gloria living on the Great South Bay. THAT was much worse for us on LI. Stay warm - or warmer than us! |

I am back. Just got back online. We never lost power here, lucky for us. However, we lost our internet connection the night of the storm.
My guess is that it is surprisingly quiet in this forum, because most NYer's are without power; and most that have it, have little internet connection. Cell phone contact is extremely spotty in areas without electricity.
I have been all around Manhattan. It is an amazing stark contrast between areas with power basically north of 30th street on the west side, and north of 40th street on the east side - and areas without power. Many, many high-rise commercial and residential buildings in Manhattan, near the shore in 'Area A', are decimated. Even if Con Ed brings power back on, the basements are filled with salt-water, the electrical systems, water pumps, septic pumps, boilers, etc - are destroyed. Many buildings will not have power for one month or more, while they re-build their internal systems.
The Rockaways, Coney Island, other 'beach' areas are completely destroyed from what I have heard from co-workers who live there. The bridge to the Rockaways is washed out, and its turning into chaos, especially after dark. Also, 90% of Long Island without power. |

Power was restored to my home yesterday evening. Without power or cable I was unable to get a handle on the pictures of LI during or after the storm.
I am almost afraid to look from the bit I have seen here.
I have to head to the South Shore today - specifically Good Sam Hospital in West Islip on 27A. Any suggestions from anyone who knows the area? |
