Re: [Rant] Windows 8 advertising blitz said by donoreo:XP on my 10 month work laptop is slow. Oddly slow. Usually an old OS on new hardware is lightning fast. An old OS on new harder tends to be slower than a new more modern OS on the same hardware, simply because the OS is able to take better advantage of said hardware. |

What would make a difference is better multitasking scheduling, and that hasn't changed AFAICT. quote: ... everything else is probably debatable. Well, wifi works way better in 7, but that's not relevant on a desktop.
Not exactly wifi related, but network related: you might want to read about some of the problems folks have had mapping Win 7 network drives from certain Linux-based media players. Works perfectly on XP, but a bunch of obscure changes are needed on 7. The easiest way seems to be a bunch of registry patches.
This is what I call progress!
As for wifi, it's all I ever use on my laptop, which had XP on it until I upgraded to Win 7 a few years ago. Wifi worked then, and it works now. If it's "way better," I don't see it. -- "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts." ― Daniel Patrick Moynihan |

This is what I call progress! I have two Windows Home Premium 7 64 bit, two Linux (Zorin OS 5-1 ), Acer Android 3.0 tablet and a WDTV Live.
Samba is setup on the two Zorin computers. The two Win 7 have no problem mapping drives to the Zorin file shares or to the usb drive on the WDTV Live. The Android talks fine as well... |

But then I don't have a TV subscription to see ads It's you. Apple has ads constantly. I haven't seen any MS ads though..just Apple. They had them for MacBooks with the RD, iPad and iPhone and now for all the iPods. I'm sure in a couple weeks they'll have some for the new iPad mini and new iMacs.
Will be interesting to see how things with Microsoft work. They needed to change, not sure if they went about the right way, but it needed to be done. Apple did it back in 2006 and that was their best move. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

digitalfuturSees More Than ShownPremium join:2000-07-15 BurlingtonON kudos:2 | Agreed. I gave Zorin OS 6 a spin on my hobby PC, and while it has the most Windows-like interface of all the Linus distros, it's still extremely unintuitive to use. Right-click navigation is non-existent, and the update functionality is cryptic. But the worst issue is the extent to which it relies on a command line (text) interface that moved long ago to icons or links in Windows and OS.

The ability to pin regularly used excel spreadsheets to the Excel shortcut on my taskbar hugely improves my efficiency. How is that a major improvement versus a shortcut to the spreadsheet, on the desktop? Click on it, and Excel fires up the spreadsheet. Come on guys, I'm a linux user. I shouldn't have to be telling you this stuff. |

I gave Zorin OS 6 a spin on my hobby PC, and while it has the most Windows-like interface of all the Linus distros Not to be overly rude or anything but if you're looking for a distro with a windows like interface you should just stay with windows. There's no reason to shake up the pot if you're not willing to learn a new interface, hell a new one may even surprise you in a good way. Furthermore I would bet your poor experience is from using a relatively unknown distro. If you were to take any of the better known and supported distros (fedora, mint, debian, suse, ubuntu) for a ride you'd likely have a better time without having to touch the "dirty" command line.
said by digitalfutur:Linux will not break out of its sub 2% market share unless the user experience greatly improves. I agree that breaking out of the 2% margin is nigh impossible for Linux but I disagree as to your reason. The user experience with Linux is comparable to if not better than that seen with windows. The real problem is there's no advertising for Linux which leads to public ignorance about Linux which leads to very few manufacturers selling machines preinstalled with Linux. |

My start menu can hold 26 icons, my taskbar has six and the lesser used (but still overall commonly used) are grouped on my desktop. It's still inefficient for me to Windows Key + M to get access to those items but Windows 8's start menu is just as inefficient so that's the best I've got.
I'd probably benefit from a small floaty small icon applet but I haven't found one that I like yet. Matrox had one with a video card back in the day that I liked but I can't find one similar. |
