[hard drive] Hard drive isn't running at USB 3.0???

I started a backup transfer of all my Steam data and other personal data as well because I'm going to upgrade to Windows 8 with and have it format my hard drive completely.

Bought the »www.maxtor.com/content/data_shee···4_ds.pdf 500GB Maxtor One Touch 4 in 2008 and I have it running on the USB 3.0 with a blue USB 3.0 cable cord. It is only at around 18Mb/s to 20Mb/s.

I don't understand it I thought a single USB 3.0 port could transfer data 100's of megabytes faster than USB 2.0???

Theoretically it can. The drive you linked to is only capable of USB 2.0 though.
If the drive is platter-based (vs flash / SSD) that will affect the transfer speed as will the RPM of the drive and the type of drive in general.

The upper limits of theoretical bandwidth are rarely approached in the tech world.

The Maxtor has a USB 2.0 adapter in it, which is what is limiting your speed.

Then I should be able to go 100's of megabytes faster because USB 2.0 works with USB 3.0

Am I not limited to the max speed that the USB port can do???

No, you are limited to the max speed of the slowest part of the chain. If you had a USB 3.0 drive enclosure, connected to a USB 3 port, with a USB 3 cable, the bottleneck would be the drive itself. But in this case, you are limited by the USB 2.0 adapter in the Maxtor case.

USB 2 devices will run on a USB 3 port, but they will still only run at USB 2.0 speed.

So just because USB 2.0 can run on USB 3.0 doesn't mean it will run at USB 3.0???

correct.

Is there any such way for my external 500GB Maxtor One Touch 4 USB 2.0 plug to be replaced with a USB 3.0 plug???

Buy a new one and do research to make sure its 3.0

A 4 year old Maxtor, no. Some of the Seagates are designed with a removable pod that houses the interface, but I don't think Maxtor ever bothered with future proofing.

What you could do is open up the Maxtor case, remove the drive itself, and drop it into a USB 3.0 enclosure. »www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi···hInDesc=
Just make sure you get one with the appropriate internal connector. A 2008 could still be IDE. You'll also want to pick the correct size. My guess is you have a 3.5" drive in there.

Okay so like how do I do that if there are no screws holding it together???

In the tech world we are always limited to the slowest link in the chain and in the tech world there are few things that we can be certain of! The theoretical throughput will always be throttled by whatever the slowest performing device is. I could use many examples to illustrate the point but I'm not sure that's necessary.

To put it another way, USB 2.0 has a theoretical maximum signaling rate of 480Mb/s (~35MB/s in real life mode which is what really matters ). Back when your USB 2.0 device was made the hardware only supported that throughput. There is nothing in this world that will make it run faster. It simply can't.

It'd be like plugging a tool into my Oldsmobile and asking the engine to put out double the horsepower - it simply isn't going to happen. OK I couldn't help but use an analogy - my apologies.

And after putting the drive into a USB3 enclosure, you will then be limited by the drive speed. Which, although faster, will still NOT be "100's of megabytes faster than USB 2.0". Just set your expectations accordingly.
