Well considering only Win8 users have IE10 (Win7 is supposed to get it mid Nov), and that has only been out for two days (went on sale Fri 10/26/2012) the number of affected Yahoo! users is pretty small.

The bigger issue is will Yahoo! take any notice of DNT in general? According to this statement

quote:
When a consumer puts Do Not Track in the header, we don't know what they mean.

I'd say no.

Is anyone surprised?

I'm more surprised they announced their intent to ignore DNT. I think most will just silently ignore it.

Of course. Major websites make money from

• Ads.
• Collecting data about users and selling it.

Since DNT would affect. if implemented, the second revenue stream I doubt anyone will take it very seriously.

Sure they'll take it seriously.

It'll be another datapoint in the tracking profile they build.

Then they'll use it to try to sell you privacy snakeoil!

It's a higher-value datapoint as well. I suspect most folks don't take all that many privacy precautions, and DNT "says something" out of the norm about folks that do. I'll leave it to the professional data-miners as to what it might directly imply - but it seems to me it definitely would at least be a significant data-bit in the overall "snapshot" a tracker can assemble from a user's browser agent and JavaScript responses. The more unique that "signature", the better it will act like a universal tracking cookie.

I browse with JavaScript shut off, which is its own rather out-of-the-norm signature data-bit in a universe of heavy JS users - but that data-bit is far more than balanced by all the other bits that shutting off JS denies a tracker.

Also spotted at: The Verge

quote:
Microsoft was warned that its decision to enable Do Not Track (DNT) by default in Windows 8's Internet Explorer 10 would encourage web content providers to ignore the request to keep advertisers from following user's movements around the web, and those predictions are becoming very true. Yahoo has just published its thoughts on the matter, and in the blog post says that it "will not recognize IE10’s default DNT signal on Yahoo! properties at this time." The company cites that the DNT standard has not been finalized, and that Microsoft's decision "degrades the experience for the majority of users and makes it hard to deliver on our value proposition to them."

Perhaps Facebook could be persuaded to expand in more detail just what that "value proposition" might be? Then again, maybe not...

The whole DNT thing is a joke, made to laugh at extremely naive... Big corporations invest huge money into tracking industry and now they will obey that DNT flag? Are you kidding me? They will "deliver on our value proposition to them." (meaning to us, users, as they say), no matter what...

They can ignore it all they want and continue with ads, I think some people wish we never had ad blockers but the simple truth is ads have become harbinger of viruses and malware. I know some people will never be as tight and lock down the PC like I have but that is the nature of the game. I also do not buy as seen on TV products that don't work and are advertised on local channels.

You want my business then make a good product and not use planned obsolescence and bogus advertisements.

Besides adblock plus I use the Do Not Track Plus addon. I don't depend on the web sites to enforce DNT web header. »donottrackplus.com/howitworks.php

I also turn off images while on Yahoo. Don't need it for main page, and don't need it for groups. You do need yimg to read mail. So it gets permitted to read mail and turned right back off.

The groups I belong to are not mainstream. The ones that are I already get newsletters from. I subscribed.

Some stuff is local dealer only. You cannot sell new online - so they depend on dealer newsletters rather than national advertising.

I can't buy what I can't see. I can also ignore.

With so many items vying for your attention - marketing has become vulgar.

I use all of the above plus private browsing. If marketing wants to be a pain in the butt, then I'm reciprocating.

Like you could ever trust anyone who tortures the English language like this:

said by some yahoo :

"In our view, this degrades the experience for the majority of users and makes it hard to deliver on our value proposition to them."

FWIW, the "value proposition" is "we propose that your opinion has no value".

I imagine some of the six people who still use Yahoo! are annoyed with this. Any word on what AOL's policy is?

Well, I do have a couple of backup Yahoo eMail accounts. But I haven't actually "used" them in at least two years, though I've logged in from time to time to keep them "alive". I'm not sure if any of that constitutes "using" them, though...
