Re: [MoP] DPS To start you off. Do you mostly do solo content? (i.e. quests, older instances, etc.)
Second, two beginner tools you can use are Recount and/or Skada to monitor Damage Done, Dps, Healing Done, Absorbs, etc. These are addons that will give you a neat customizable window in game and in real time.
Once you begin doing more serious stuff with raids you can use World of Logs. There are addons that will start and stop your wowcombatlog.txt and you'll upload this game generated fight text document to the website. There you'll be able to analyze every action taken by every member of your raid team. What abilities players use at what time, raid damage taken per second, raid healing per second, deaths, etc.
You probably won't have to worry about the latter but try out Recount and/or Skada. I say and/or as depending on your role in the group (Raid Leader, stat reporter) you might want to have both up. I use Recount for tracking Healing/Absorbs and Skada for Damage Done/DPS. So I have two windows displaying that information to me at all times.

| metta you can make a seperate skada window that will display other things, i have 2 windows one for damage and one for threat, i dont bother with healing, as far as i am concerned, everyone is alive good move on.

| I'm almost willing to drop Omen3 threat meter altogether since my grid annotates threat changes on raid members well enough and the built in threat color changes on the life bars of enemy mobs is good too. i never like the skada threat for some reason.

I seem to solo more then anything else. I do ok.
When ever i'm in a group, I tend to "hang back" and not get involved in the rolls for drops on bosses.
I just don't like the bickering that can occur at that time.
And gawd help ya, if you hit the wrong button for the role.. need/greed.
