Re: Hurricane Sandy-Frankenstorm Outages/Issues/Updates

(11/02/12) BETHPAGE, NY - Cablevision, the parent company of News 12 Connecticut, says they will offer credits to customers that were withut service due to Hurricane Sandy. The company released the following statement:
In light of the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy on our customers, Cablevision Systems Corporation today announced the following credit policy for Optimum customers whose service has been disrupted as a result of the hurricane.

Optimum customers can receive credit for any full or partial day during which they were unable to access Optimum services, even if the disruption was caused by a loss of electrical power. The company is asking customers to call after their Optimum service is restored, so it can calculate and apply the full credit to which a customer is entitled.

"Many of our customers have been severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy, and we want them to know that credits are available for the period of time that they have not had Optimum service, including when electrical power was not available," said Kristin Dolan, Cablevision\'s senior executive vice president of product management and marketing. "In addition, customers will not be responsible for any damage to Cablevision equipment caused by the storm, and will be able to exchange damaged equipment at no cost."

Customers who have experienced a loss of service should contact Cablevision within 30 days of service being restored and request a credit for their regular monthly charges during the period when Optimum TV, phone or Internet products were unavailable, including periods when there was no electricity to the home or business where the services are received.

Additionally, customers who have damaged Cablevision equipment - set-top boxes or cable modems - should inform the company of the damage and we will exchange the equipment without penalty.

Customers can request outage credits or facilitate an exchange of their equipment by calling their local Cablevision service number or e-mailing the company through the contact pages at Optimum.net or Cablevision.com.

First of all, it is considered general good etiquette to not post full news articles but rather a short summary and a link to provide more credibility. To that effect, here is the link to the Cablevision press release regarding the credit.

For what it's worth, our neighborhood has been without power since about 6:30pm the night of the storm, but we never lost TV, internet, etc.

I understand peoples' frustrations with lack of power and other utilities (we just were loaned a generator yesterday, I've been powerless for a while myself!), but I don't understand why some people seem so angry (there was a story about people throwing eggs at linesmen working in Bridgeport, CT). This storm was a big deal, it's not like everything was going to magically get fixed overnight. Especially with Cablevision, AT&T, and Verizon... they generally need to wait for telephone pole issues and power issues to be cleared up before they can do their own work in a neighborhood.

I appreciate that kickass posted the entire press release. (I also note that in your Splash Page thread, you posted screenshots but did not post a link!)

Still no power here. Verizon POTS and cell phone are working fine. My local cell site is the Verizon Wireless Network Operations Center!

Friends with AT&T and T-Mobile say their phones are not working.

Well I'm in Freehold.

Lost power from Monday 4 PM until 8 PM last night.

I was able to snag a generator, but that didn't help with Cablevison because they didn't come back until the power did.

My neighbor with FIOS had service the whole time.

The offer of a credit for lost service is ok, but dang I would have like to have been able to use the Internet. I telecommute so it's an important issue for me.

It's looking more and more like I'm going to switch because of this.

Optimum had been dead here since Monday afternoon when the wind started blowing hard. Still not on. Fios never went down once. If they would come connect it today I would have Fios back here in a minute.

Normal speeds 18.75 / 2.0

Hey guys, wasn't there a recent movie about the power going off throughout the entire world? What's the name of the movie?

That's because it was a splash page on the Optimum Network home page. No link is necessary.

I never, ever go to that page, and had no idea where to get the info you posted.

So it would never dawn on you that the brand of our service is called Optimum and that logic would dictate that you can get it by going to optimum.net?

My point is that you did exactly what you chastised someone else for doing.

neither can i, i get busy signal, blank nothing or a computer voice telling me to call back later.
live chat is useless, i wait +30 minutes, 177 in line, get down to my spot and they cancel it, i have to start all over again back to 193 in line.
we have power, neighbor has cable but not me, my line is ripped from the tap but still strung up to the pole, just a matter of crimping a new F connector and connecting it to the tap - a ten minute job at the very least.
ive already sent email days ago.

Wow have people lost perspective in our modern world!

I see so many whining babies here crying about how their service is out.....folks you do know this is a once a century storm and with it came the damage of that magnitude. Do you think a internet fairy pops out of the PC monitor and waves a wand to fix things in an instant?

Like the other posters mentioned....stop bitching and start helping to clean up...be patient, neighborly, and civil to others around you that are in the same boat.

I sometimes wonder what it will take to snap people out of their selfish self centered world they live in. If we don't we are doomed.

im not a whiner and im not complaining.
i didnt whine when i was without power for 6 days and im not whining that i dont have optimum either.
i have a generator and 3g for internet but i really need the high speed internet for work as its difficult to do what i am employed to do on 3g internet.
so its a bit disconcerting when your neighbor has it but you dont because the wire is disconnected from the tap.

i tried three times on the live chat, got "disconnected" because no agents were available.
I gave up.
I'll call my guy tomorrow and pay him to get up there and reconnect it... i need internet for work ! 3g isnt going to suffice for long periods of time.

I have to agree with you. A few years back whenever power went out, cable would remain on (as long as a line wasn't actually cut). Last year was the first time that we actually lost service during an outage. It started as about an hour after the power went out, cable service would drop. Then a half hour, then eventually as soon as power went out the cable went out. If the power even flickers, the cable service "resets" (ie the modem has to resync, the tv's briefly lose signal, etc…). I have batteries connected to all my devices that use the service so there's no power interruption during the quick "blips". We also run a generator for the longer outages.

Last year a tech told us that the batteries in the box on the pole had just died and they would send a truck with a generator out to charge it up. That never happened.

We were without power from Monday evening to Sunday evening. The cable went out with the power and came back up with the power. Just like all our power outages over the last year.

My neighbor, with fios, has not lost service once in the same year. This past outage, and yes you can say conspiracy theory here, it seems like Cablevision would rather just give people a credit then provide service during an outage. With their service outage page that seems know if you have service or not, its odd they make you call to get credit. Why not just give everyone who didn't have service a credit? I guess because some won't call so they won't have to give everyone a credit?

Regardless of whether there's a problem that is out of Cablevisions control or not, the fact is… I had no service and my neighbor did. I called Verizon and after 30 years of service with Cablevision I'll be making the switch to Fios. Cheaper (for at least 2 years), and 75/35 should be nice. I couldn't even get in touch with any one at Cablevision during the outage. Either busy signals or no one would ever pick up after the message "assuring me" that cable service would be returned as soon as power was.

Call this bitching if you want, but I'd rather have the service I'm paying for then get a credit after a long outage. When my neighbor has service and I don't, then I'll use what he uses.

I can't imagine it's cheaper to pay people to take customer calls requesting credit than to apply credit either en masse to all accounts, or all affected accounts. However, since a majority of people are going to call requesting credit regardless of whether it is automatically given, I guess it's the option they felt best to take.

There are plenty of people with FIOS down as I type.
My brother has FIOS and is down all week, same for my father in law.
I check the status for them and verizons website and 800 number is telling customers they are commited to restoring service by tommorrow night.

And yet I've known people who have had FIOS out for more than two weeks after lat years storm when many other people had their Cablevision service back in in hours. There's so many factors in a major storm.
