Chaos reigns, I guess. Website is in New York, Montreal never been down. We posted a tweet and also on the admin page when everything was being switched due to the hurricane by prevention, hours after our new york equipment went on diesel, even though we had backup power in New York provided by the data center there, we now switched most of our services elsewhere. Website is up, customer interface about to be brought up again, your DNS provider might affect how quick the swicht is felt.
Sorry for typos this was typed in a hurry, lots of work to be done. -- Martin - VoIP.ms |

Of course, who really expects this kind of storm to hit New York??? Not totally unpredictable, it is on the coast after all. I moved my wife's website to an inland seismically inactive area after hurricane Wilma did it's worst a few years back.
Actually the datacentre would have been OK. One of the five Diesel generators was overturned by the storm but the other four kicked in and ran for 12 hours until the one-and-only Diesel pump, used to pump fuel from underground tanks, failed. -- DPC3825 (bridged mode) - WRT610N + Tomato - Panasonic KX-TGP500 - Asterisk 1.8.11.0 with Asterisk GUI on Virtual Server Anveo - Voxbeam - Numbergroup - Callcentric - VoIP.MS - Localphone - UKDDI |

 | reply to OmagicQ Not sure why this is such a surprise storm. I was looking forward to this storm to sail in high wind and this was all over the weather maps 10 days prior (in fact I booked time off work 10d earlier to sail this!).
From voip.ms login update (I did not realize they had problem , though less then callcentric) until I logged on to check other stuff.

Report from NYC: Commercial utility power is no longer available. Site has successfully transferred to generators. No impact to customers.
We're up and operational. Our data center currently has fuel for 65 hours. We're preparing mirror images of VoIP.ms website (currently hosted in NYC) and our New York POP in case power goes down. At the time of writing this, no services/customers are affected by the storm.
We'll provide updates as they come by. |

quote: Sandy takes out 25 pct of cell towers
By PETER SVENSSON, Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) Superstorm Sandy knocked out a quarter of the cell towers in an area spreading across 10 states, and the situation could get worse, federal regulators said Tuesday.
Many cell towers that are still working are doing so with the help of generators and could run out of fuel before commercial power is restored, the Federal Communications Commission said.
The landline phone network has held up better in the affected area, which stretches from Virginia to Massachusetts, the FCC said, but about a quarter of cable customers are also without service.
The FCC did not have an estimate for the number of people in the affected area.
Call centers for 911 service have held up relatively well, with only a few failures, according to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski. Calls to those centers are being rerouted, but operators may not be getting the automatic location information that 911 centers normally receive.
Sandy left widespread destruction, but the water welling into southern Manhattan drenched one of the world's densest communications nodes, taking out popular websites and forcing telecom carriers to reroute international traffic.
As commercial power was cut to the southern tip of Manhattan on Monday, data centers and facilities of phone companies in the Wall Street area were forced to switch to diesel generators. Data centers that failed to keep running on backup power brought down news and gossip sites Gawker, Huffington Post and many popular New York-based blogs.
Verizon Communications Inc., the biggest phone company in the region, had some of its facilities in downtown Manhattan flooded, shutting down phone and Internet service.
Further uptown, data centers hosted in a "telecom hotel" that spans a whole block and houses Google's New York headquarters were reporting outages as well, apparently because backup power failed when commercial power was cut Monday evening.

(Emphasis mine.)
So ... 1) It looks like the hardest hit place in this whole storm was south Manhattan. Guess where CallCentric is located. 2) POTS has done pretty well, except in South Manhattan. 3) Over a quarter of cell towers are down -- and possibly many more when back-up generators run out of fuel. 4) Even further uptown (at Google's and other's facilities) there were some outages or degradation of service.
This was not an ordinary storm. And the hardest hit area, apparently, was South Manhattan. |

This was not an ordinary storm. And the hardest hit area, apparently, was South Manhattan. Yet voip.ms kept going because they had a generator, and when it ran out of fuel they still kept going because they had a mirror of the New York sever.
What a company! When other providers keel over, voip.ms keeps its users connected. |

And if [frbrulo] waits until 9AM Eastern (a few minutes from now), I am sure that he can contact Voip.MS and I am quite sure that they will tell him that they are not bankrupt. That's just plain silly, [frbrulo].
-----------------
But I'll tell you this: Voip.MS did a fine job during Sandy and the following storm. They are to be commended. But New York City is not their home base, not where their people are.
If [Montreal] itself had been subject to a similar catastrophe, if Martin's flat was flooded, if Peter's poutine was frozen solid, if Michael's mansion was dark for days....
....they it might have been a very different story no matter how many mirrors they had in other cities.
-----------------
The MS in Voip.MS is the domain name for the country of Montserrat. It's not for Microsoft or for Mississippi, but rather Montserrat. »support.godaddy.com/help/article···in-names
For some reason, instead of using an internet domain like [.com] or [.net] or [.ca] the company chose [.ms]
And that's fine. It gave them a distinctive name, which is always good.
Lots of countries have marketed their domains. For example, [.tv] for Tuvalu, or [.md] from Moldova.
But I bring this up to point out that Montserrat suffered a major disaster in 1995. A volcano, dormant for centuries, destroyed a major part of the island. About 2/3 of the people left, and most of those have not returned.
So---things happen. The [.MS] domain in the Voip.MS name reminds us of the inscrutable disasters of this world.... |

That's because they don't actually have switching equipment like a real VOIP provider. They are basically reselling trunks from other providers, so of course these asterix box based servers can be located anywhere.
Like saying wow my GV and Skype accounts didn't go down. |
