Re: [Storm 2012] Outages NYC

You guys are taking way to slow. This is not how a business should handle problems even if there was a major problem which is not.Astoria didn't get affected or very little. Majority of areas in Astoria have restored service to 11103, the rest like 11105 which had little impact or none is left behind. I strongly believe this is the worst of ISP providers out there, very poor customer service, very poor service overall. We rely on internet data for our business and being a investor this mean I'm losing time and money. Ill switch to Time Warner Or Optimum it's just more reliable company and is shame that you guys have the monopoly in the area with Time Warner there are defiantly more better ISP services out of there.

They taking their time although we paying them despite that. Its ridiculous that they have monopoly in the areas this service is the poorest.

I just got off of a storm update call with NY and will be posting updates to www.rcn.com/j/stormwatch shortly. The bottom line to the issues in Queens, Astoria, Woodside and lower Manhattan is that in some areas we are waiting on the go ahead from Con Edison, so we can access our equipment on the poles that was damaged. The power company has right to first access.

Some areas, customers have cable and internet but no phone, in other areas, they have cable and phone but no internet. It depends on what particular piece of equipment was damaged.

We also had several areas in NY where customers' service was restored and then went down again. This was due to some damage done when others accessed the poles to repair their equipment.

The NY team is out in full force today, working tirelessly to get all of our customers up and running.

I want to say thanks to you all for your patience during this difficult time.

Updates on power outages and service restores as of Nov 3rd at 12noon:

Lower Manhattan and Lehigh Valley, PA are still experiencing power outages which are directly linked to services restoration. Queens undergoing continued storm clean-up of downed trees and poles; in this area, repairs are closely coordinated with ConEd. ConEd has first rights to access poles and RCN must wait for approval to access our equipment on the poles. -- see local updates here: »www.rcn.com/stormwatch

If power has been restored and you're still unable to access RCN services, it could be because the power to your home comes from a different source than the power to our network facilities. In some cases, there could cable lines feeding to your home that were damaged.

If you have commercial power but are without cable, Internet or phone services please contact us; however, be aware wait times are longer than normal due to the storm.

Thanks to the RCN reps here who have attempted to communicate with us. It is appreciated.

That said-I'm one of those in Astoria who lost Internet Tuesday morning, then regained it later Tuesday only to lose it again Thursday evening. What's really frustrating is that if I understand what you've written, conEd ok'ed someone else to do work on a pole during the course of which RCN equipment on said pole was damaged. Ok, I can understand that part. But I'm about to enter day 3 w/o Internet because-if I follow and correct me if I've misunderstood-conEd is STILL making you wait for access to the pole that they let someone else work on and damage? That's beyond absurd from conEd if true.

We don't want to call out any other company who is working hard to restore their service, I can only say that ConEd is making all carriers wait to access the poles, it was not another telecommunications company that damaged the fiber.

Do you realize there were people that died, lost their homes, don't have gas for cars and your biggest problem is being without tv or internet? It can be frustrating but every utility is experiencing issues and can't fix everyone at once.

So conEd damaged them themselves? It doesn't really look good to give half of an explanation. In any case-still frustrated, not least because I see the same trees down and damaged poles around my neighborhood I did on Tuesday. I don't know how these things are prioritized but it feels like we're at the bottom of someone's list.

10016 is still without cable or Internet... A bit frustrating when half the building that is on twc has connectivity and rcn does not...

That's because we are. They prioritize the areas on coverage and other factors.

Ok, so conEd did manage to burn up some wires while trying to work on a broken pole at Ditmars and 29th St in Astoria.

I'm sure nobody on the provider end has any idea at all when this will be fixed and since it's not restoring power to lower manhattan, who knows how long it will take. At least I can give thanks for people posting videos from their phones to youtube so I can get my mind around what the problems are.

Well just tried to post links to YouTube videos showing damage done to wires during attempted repairs to a pole at Ditmars & 29th St in Astoria. Held up in moderation, though. Bottom line: that the providers involved don't even want to mention the nature of the problem or what caused it does not give me confidence that the problem is in hand.

Internet is down in 10024 (88th st). Went out around noon. We never lost power and have had good service throughout the week. Can't understand how it's out again up here on the upper west side. I appreciate that there are people out there that are going without much more. But we're all trying to get back to work. And that means Internet.

Those Queens lines effect lower Manhattan's connectivity? (I'm in Stuy town, was impressed when Internet worked last night, then it went out this morn)

Appreciate any updates

Nah, that's not affecting you. Every area has its own problems. I'm just trying to give folks in Astoria an idea what the problem is. And for the record all indications are that conEd is the source of the holdup. Too bad, however, that rcn would rather risk the goodwill of its customers with what amounts to a string of "the check is in the mail" assurances rather than "call out" conEd. Of course the worst part is we're in the dark as to why our service was disrupted days after the storm in (for Astorians anyway) an area that wasn't affected much.

Have you been to Florida or in china lately? Go try to live there and let me know since you telling me about that.NY got hit a bit and was unprepared, the lost of life is very sad the rest can be fixed,If anything what this is telling me about NY the infrastructure is very old and NY is unprepared got hit in past even worst but people have short memory. Now when you rely on internet to make a living being a day trader that is a also matter of survival. For a business of their magnitude and revenue they are taking way to slow that not a justification is actual fact. They are negligent due to the coverage and the type of areas. One more reason for me to switch if you cant rely.My cousin which is one floor down has TW had and the service stopped for a day which also tells a lot since we are talking about ISP.
