in a strange way we are lucky that tunnel took in so much water, that would have otherwise have ended up filling more important subway tunnels and building subbasements. my guess is pumping out that tunnel will be low on the city's priority list since all it does is relieve cross town traffic.

The water of the Atlantic Ocean is infinite relative to the few million gallons of the battery u/p.

AVD of course, but we are only talking the few hours around high tide where the storm surge was able to flow over battery park into the tunnels, so the water involved was in fact a limited quantity. It's logical that tunnel diverted a lot of floodwater that would have moved further inland and done a lot more damage during the few hours the water was actually flowing in from the bay.
