Sandy

So in light of all this destructive weather I have a interesting topic.
In the event of a even stronger storm that is apocalyptic and communications are damaged and there is a severe loss of power. Would anyone here attempt to restore some function of our communication systems provided that they have the knowledge how to.

Re: Sandy

Interesting question you posed. Based on your post, if communications were damaged by apocalyptic storm I would think the communications infrastructure would have been destroyed: central offices reduced to a pile of bricks, telephone poles broken into splinters, aerial copper and fiber lines snapped and blown/carried who knows where and cell towers were left as twisted piles of metal.

At that point seeing the utter devastation I think the will to live and protect ones family would be the driving force. Food and water would have to be sourced before even thinking about communications. (I do realize that there are some who would find their cell phone or landline phone in the rubble and attempt to contact their ISP to find out when their internet will be restored )

Then we have the aspect of not knowing how widespread the damage is. Would we have any government left at any level who could help.

If it was truly apocalyptic I would make sure I had my family safe, had found shelter, food and water and realizing that the end is near.

And if we lived thru that then I'd drop to my knees and look heavenwards and give thanks for a second chance.

I would think that in a event like that or in a situation like the show revolution with the exception power could be turned back on. I would think that some military might still be together the main government would probably fall apart. Food and protection would be important but after that we would need to communicate and people would diffidently want modern technology back . I guess my scenario would be that there is no companies left to fix the problems only the citizens that have the experience to restore the infrastructures of different networks, get power grids back on etc.

This thread kinda cracks me up. So is this a superstorm that reigns fire and ice down on the earth and just destroys everything in its path? Sandy was a beast no doubt, but far from apocalyptic. Even if say there's a massive earthquake that knocks NYC into the ocean, other parts of the country would hopefully still be there to help with recovery and rebuilding. If life is truly wiped out then I'd think that getting internet back up would be done by the people that want it back up and not CenturyLink and crew. Now if you're talking an apocalyptic zombie storm, we're all doomed!

Dependent on the devastation caused by what ever event we could come up with would determine what would happen.

If the scenario is limited to the East coast, then the Government and most of the companies would be intact. It would be a long period of rebuild but I believe we could get thru it.

If we change the scenario to nationwide then we change the whole picture. There would be pockets of government left but I believe lawlessness would be the norm. Just look at whats going on in the North East for an idea of the way people think and react.

The last scenario would be something on a global scale. If that would happen then I am afraid that civilization as we know it is doomed. And this is due to the complacent society we have become. IMHO we have become too entitled and self centered and demand things like modern technologies (again I point to the NE as an example).

I haven't watched the show Revolution but if we had a national or global disaster I would think in the years after it would be more like Kevin Costner's move The Postman with small groups banding together for the common good of the group.

Let's get serious here ...... If something happened on the East Coast rest believe that Northern Virginia would get help pronto, while your little area which is at the opposite end of the state (I mean Commonwealth) would have to wait.
