A smart Canadian business would host here to avoid the precipitous actions of US authorities, the expense of any actions in the US, and might be prohibited by stature or professional best practices from hosting outside Canadian jurisdiction. |

kudos:20 | The difference is that companies like CallCentric and Gawker didn't HAVE a backup server, let alone one on a cheap transit provider.
In Gawker's case, they just deserve any hardship caused (a company who gets 100% of their revenue from their website has no backups from their website). Companies like CallCentric should be the subject of massive lawsuits for gross incompetence. They didn't even have backup POWER, they should never have been allowed to operate a telephone company like that, but sadly there's no regulation against complete idiots running a telephone company.

REDUNDANT BACKUP! You don't need to be so cocky, It is a backup of a backup so its an N+1 type of setup it is much lower capacity than the main backup |

Depends on what type of telephone company you are talking about. With POTS classified as an essential service, I doubt anyone selling POTS or legally POTS-equivalent services in Canada would get away with that.
CallCentric, FPL, voip.ms, etc. are VoIP sold with few to no service guarantees since your service can get disrupted by multiple factors beyond the VoIP provider's control. Many ISPs that offer bundled and internally supported VoIP only (fully) support their VoIP service when used with ISP-provided router and ATA so they can remotely manage and troubleshoot the devices. |
