Not "I apologize for doing wrong to you," but "I regret that you felt were offended." In other words, it's not my fault for doing bad stuff -- it's your fault for objecting to my doing bad stuff.
We hear it on TV all the time, and it's become the standard form of apology in America.
It's a good thing that the British haven't changed the meaning of the word "apology." An apology means nothing if it's twisted like that. |
