Mother-in-Law tries to sell old English Tea Set Online.

Last month put it up for sale on the net and right away someone from the UK offered $1000 and she was elated. Friend helped her do this. She called the wife and told her about it and we both knew that was too much money for the set. So I investigated..and sure enough was a scam....reminds me of this video Mikko gave recently.

That a scam originated from a Craigslist ad in itself is par for the course.
The Craigslist about-Scams page offers practical advice/red flags re scams.

A question re this incident
Did the scammer ever mention the 'tea set' in their initial contact with the seller?

God bless Craigslist...NOT. I know of a few people who actually got what they wanted and were happy, but that was many years ago, and personally, I wouldn't touch anything advertised from there. The whole site is a jackpot for scams and rip offs and gives those who don't know better a very bad reputation.

one rule about craigs list I have been told is if you are to meet in person it is best to arrange a meeting place that is public. Has cameras and lots of traffic.

Using my location for example, A good suggestion would be a Wawa parking lot. Wawa and Super Wawas are never slow, have good lighting at night and lots of camera coverage.

I advertised a nice cherry coffee table for $200; the guy who came to collect it was happy with his coffee table and I was happy with the ten $20 bills.

The whole site is a jackpot for scams and rip offs and gives those who don't know better a very bad reputation.

My reputation destroyed, and all for a lousy $200.

I also was very successful recently in selling a dresser, sofa, chairs, and a desk on craigslist. Got about 80% of our asking price, overall. I was pleasantly surprised

I've heard that craigslist is the place to go to, um, find a companion (at an hourly rate).

I would think that if you are reasonable in expectations, craigslist is not a scam. I buy and sell there often. Granted, not million dollar items. You have to be careful. Just like anything.

If the price is too good to be true, then don't pursue it, buying or selling. duh!

Especially if you're Secret Service and have to travel a lot away from home... just check out listings for your destinations, and you're good to go. So to speak...

Well yeah, why buy when you can just rent?

Well as they say, you don't pay for um, companionship, you pay for them to go away afterwards

And don't underpay them or they'll come back later to haunt you...

I usually meet inside a bank lobby near the ATM's. Lots of cameras and I insist the buyer gets cash from the ATM while I'm there - no counterfeit money that way.

I never did acquire an eye for China, now if it were a set of beer mugs...

What I meant to ask was whether or not the scammer made any reference to the item for sale in the inquiry they sent or just made general references that would fit with numerous different items for sale?
e.g., That is just what I was looking for, I've always wanted one.
That's how the more aggressive of these scammers are operating today.
Sending out a bulk generic inquiry, refining it to fit the actual item only after receiving a reply showing interest from the seller.

It's efficient for the scammer but it also should be a huge red flag to any seller that a buyer query that doesn't actually mention the item is going to be a scam.

Our usual replies want the item for nothing - for various reasons.

If they get it, then they resell elsewhere higher.

I have had mixed results on craigslist. I have sold some car parts, furniture and recently an old truck on there. Most have ended well, but the replies you get can be frustrating. From the obvious scammer emails to the ones wanting to buy my truck that has a book value in fair condition of 3800, I have listed for 2500 but they only will offer 1000 and get mad at me for not taking their offer. Just gotta have patience when dealing with the replies.
