Apple now has a Lightning to Micro USB Cable

»store.apple.com/us/product/MD820···%3Dapple

Use this adapter to connect an iPhone, iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector to a micro USB cable to sync and charge, or to a compatible micro USB charger to charge your device.

Considering you can get a Micro USB cable for 2 bucks might be a good thing to pick up, if you ever lose your lightning cable.

Well, I'm more likely to lose the tiny adapter than the cable, and the adapter costs the same as a cable! Might as well just buy an extra cable.

Where this little adapter wins is when you're traveling and are bringing more than just Apple devices so you'll have microUSB chargers along for the ride anyway.

Does this mean they could have just made the jack on the device micro usb instead of the proprietary lightning jack they are forcing on everybody?

yes, but it wouldn't have been reversible like the lightning connector. Also, they're not forcing it on you. you don't have to buy an iphone. get another smartphone with a micro usb plug if that's what's important to you.

nah. it's the same thing over and over again. apple introduces something different and people cry about it. then what do they do? they buy it anyway and cry about it some more. There are things i don't like about Apple, but I'm tied to it so I suck it up. If it comes to a point where I can't take it anymore then I'll try something else. otherwise, any kinda changes they do, I would have to live with it.

Well just think, if they didn't make the lightening PORT you would've gotten a micro usb connection for $2. Now you get to 'donate' $30 per apple adapter, or $19 for micro usb adaptor...

or not upgrade and stay with the same connectors and accessories that I already own. It was my decision to upgrade, and it was my decision to choose something with a different connector. I could have gone with a 4S, but i chose the latest one they sold, regardless of connections.

If things start swinging away from Apple products and towards Android and PC's, this will be the turning point. There better be some cool stuff coming that a lightning connector can accomplish that a micro usb connector can't to justify this change. I was ready to get an iPhone 5 until this cable change was announced. I'm just sitting tight with my 2 year old Galaxy S for now. Apple you had me and now I'm wavering. Let's see if you can win me back. My almost 5 year old iMac will need replacing soon. There's more at stake than just the mobile and tablet market. Apple was leaps and bounds better but the competition is catching up.

if a $25 connector is holding you back from getting a great device you should enjoy for a couple of years (and utilizing a cell plan likely in the $50-$75/month, which could be a further $1200+ dollars over the course of 2 years), then i don't know what else to say, other than, it seems silly...so, if you bought a device with a MiniUSB a few years ago, did you make a big stink when it went to MicroUSB??...what about in 2 years when it goes to NanoUSB...then PicoUSB...then TurboUSB4Ti...just because MicroUSB is "standard" now, doesn't mean it will be in a couple of years...Lightning is different...so you might spend $20 on a cable instead of $2 (for some cheap knock-off that likely won't last long anyway), after investing perhaps $2000 over the course of 2 years, who cares about a $20 adapter??...seriously?

Seriously!? What's pissing me off is that I already have in our house several iPods, my wife's iPhone 4S and an iPad 2 and enough cables in cars and throughout the house to charge all these devices. We also have micro usb cables for kindles and a couple of android phones. Instead of using a cheap and already available cable for their new devices they chose to make a cable costing 10 times more because they can. It strikes me as insulting and petty on Apple's part to add this extra cost after already laying out serious cash for this stuff. I would want a cable at work, for the car and an extra one for the bedroom. $60 wouldn't break the bank but Apple could afford to sell them for a lot cheaper or they could have just made it a micro usb.

I just thought that you were giving your opinion that Apple acted obscenely by making the decision to change to the lightning port.

Apple loves you. You are their perfect customer.

While much can be done over Wi-Fi or BT now (another long thread somewhere on this), much still can't and not all cars are bang up to date with connection options, etc. I have many accessories that interface with the old dock connector. Yes, there are adapters, and Apple made sure they are three times the price of what they need to be, and they make some connections from what was slick and well fitting to making your device sit up high and wobbly. Yes, things change. But in this case it was a cash grab NOT some magical improvement in functionality. Apple even have a grip on the license of this connector for some time. For those that can't see this was simply a greedy move by Apple, well, your loss.

This is Apple arrogance at it's best. Had Apple offered the adapters for a reasonable price I think there would be less frustration out there.

FYI micro USB only supports up to 9W but the iPad requires 10W. So they could either have two different connectors or just one.

iPad does not REQUIRE 10 watts. This connector works on the iPad according to Apple

"The Lightning to Micro USB Adapter lets you connect an iPhone, iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector to micro USB cables and chargers to sync and charge your device."

i think $25 for a quality connector is reasonable...it isn't just a "connector", it is a "smart connector", that is reversible and completely digital (to allow alternative pinouts for various applications)...personally, having seen some of the $2 crap out there, i'm glad Apple doesn't allow cheap junk out there to ruin your devices...our work is littered with Blackberry and Android products with broken micro-usb connectors on them and it is a PITA and costly to continuously have them replaced/fixed...in fact, it is FAR more costly than a $25 quality connector.

in any event, if the $2 cable is that important to you, then don't buy an iPhone5...no one says you have to buy one.

Thank you for that advice.

I have not bought an iPhone 5. The connector is not the only reason.

I have two Apple cables that have come apart at the plug (the cable sheathing has separated where it enters the plug). I never pull a cord by the cable, only by the plug and when not in use I curl it up loosely and put it in a drawer. Again, the premium Apple is charging is a gouge. They can still set their products apart if they must by charging more than $2 but the money they want for their cables and adapters is rather sad.

A smart connector would have some kind of "brain". I don't think this one does.

I've yet to see details on exactly what this "smart" thing really offers other than being reversible. I believe folks are simply falling for the hype.
