While much can be done over Wi-Fi or BT now (another long thread somewhere on this), much still can't and not all cars are bang up to date with connection options, etc. I have many accessories that interface with the old dock connector. Yes, there are adapters, and Apple made sure they are three times the price of what they need to be, and they make some connections from what was slick and well fitting to making your device sit up high and wobbly. Yes, things change. But in this case it was a cash grab NOT some magical improvement in functionality. Apple even have a grip on the license of this connector for some time. For those that can't see this was simply a greedy move by Apple, well, your loss.
This is Apple arrogance at it's best. Had Apple offered the adapters for a reasonable price I think there would be less frustration out there.

i think $25 for a quality connector is reasonable...it isn't just a "connector", it is a "smart connector", that is reversible and completely digital (to allow alternative pinouts for various applications)...personally, having seen some of the $2 crap out there, i'm glad Apple doesn't allow cheap junk out there to ruin your devices...our work is littered with Blackberry and Android products with broken micro-usb connectors on them and it is a PITA and costly to continuously have them replaced/fixed...in fact, it is FAR more costly than a $25 quality connector.
in any event, if the $2 cable is that important to you, then don't buy an iPhone5...no one says you have to buy one.

I have not bought an iPhone 5. The connector is not the only reason.
I have two Apple cables that have come apart at the plug (the cable sheathing has separated where it enters the plug). I never pull a cord by the cable, only by the plug and when not in use I curl it up loosely and put it in a drawer. Again, the premium Apple is charging is a gouge. They can still set their products apart if they must by charging more than $2 but the money they want for their cables and adapters is rather sad.

The only real differences would be speed and wattage.
I'm guessing you think the $200 monster hdmi cables they sell at bestbuy also make a huge difference? |

the previous connector was used for the last 9 years...a new connector was needed as it was too large for the new chassis...i highly doubt the issues you have seen with your old connector would happen with the Lightning connector...it is a much better connector (my iPad and nano use the old connector).

Dude, they're not out to listen to logic. They're just upset that Apple does its own thing. Nano USB has the advantage of ubiquity, but it is a limited standards. Lightning is a future proof, highly capable, and very convenient interface – but unless android has it, they'll always find something to bitch about, even if it Apple were only charging $2... |

You generalize too much Sir. I have never owned an Android device. I am on my third iPhone personally and one of my sons has an iPhone and I bought my mother one. I have an iPad 2 and I've lost count how many iPods I have or bought for others.
And I already said they can charge more than $2, just not the silly prices you are apparently prepared to pay.

it has nothing to do with the physical construction of it...the design on its own virtually eliminates those problems...it is one of the advantages of the Lightning connector. |

if i go to a store to buy a charger for my device, they are all $20-$30...so, you pay $30 for a micro USB cable, or $30 for an Apple cable...the only difference is you won't be able to buy a Lightning cable for $2 each off ebay...personally, i don't care...having worked in the industry, and seen the varying degrees of quality of items, i'd rather have something made to some sort of minimum standards to ensure my $700 device isn't damaged from some POS $2 cable.

Over the course of 8-10yrs of the standards use it will wind up being like 7-10 extra dollars per year to buy a handful of extra cables. It's just not really an issue. |

The thing about micro usb is that it is a standard. Which means groups of people work on it, and compete to drive down prices.
So what happens when a new standard of micro usb comes out that supports more wattage and faster speeds? What will you guys do to defend your overpriced buying when that happens? |
