TheMGPremium join:2007-09-04 Canada kudos:2 | reply to tommo How old is the smoke alarm? Some alarms have a feature that will chirp when the alarm itself is due for replacement.
You could also have a depleted "new" battery. What is the use before date on the battery? |

| reply to tommo I suspect a faulty smoke detector. Replace it without delay.
I would recommend getting a ten year smoke detector from Lowe's Depot that has a ten year battery that supposedly lasts the life of the detector. Or have an electrician install hardwired smokes. -- Romney-Ryan and Scott Brown are the Right Choice as they are Hope & Change you can count on. |

LazManPremium join:2003-03-26 canada | reply to tommo Check the age - some have a "lifetime" counter in them, then chirp's at the end of their design life...
Failing that, try another battery (could be a dud).
Or, replace, they're cheap enough - a combo smoke/CO detector can be had for under $40, and a plain smoke is about $12 for the most basic of basic units. A combo ionizing/photo-electric would be my suggestion, assuming you have an existing CO detector.
I don't like the sealed ones with the 10 year battery, myself - I know the lithium batteries are supposed to last the life of the detector, but I prefer to put in fresh batteries twice a year. It's cheap insurance. |

Spend the extra money for a good alkaline battery from a major brand: Duracell, Energizer, Panasonic, Eveready. -- ~Help Find a Cure for Cancer~ ~Proud Member of Team Discovery ~ |

| reply to tommo "Seven years after initial power up, this unit will chirp" every 30 seconds. This is an operational end-of-life feature that will indicate that it is time to replace the alarm. UL 2034, the independent standard applicable to CO alarms, requires CO alarms to have an end-of-life warning. This requirement went into effect in March 2007, meaning any CO alarm manufactured after April 2007 with a UL listing must have this feature. Most states that require CO alarms in residential dwellings mandate that the alarm meet the UL 2034 standard."

| reply to Critsmcgee So if this went into effect in 3/2007, 7 years from that date would be 3/2014. Any detectors manufactured under UL 2034 should have 18 months "life" left.
Not saying that some manufactures did not adopt this standard before it became official.
But this aside, for the price of a detector VS your safety, spend the $40.00 -- The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. |

But this aside, for the price of a detector VS your safety, spend the $40.00 I have a unit that's EOL manufactured in 2004. It started chirping this year so I know Kidde started adding that feature in 2004 at least to some units. |
