Re: [Serious] Further to the February discussion of Mental Healt
Glad things are working well for you Zacron. I work in the mental health field and it's always good to hear when things have worked right.
Rifleman: Like any profession, not all psychiatrists are created equal. Go back to your GP or whoever referred you and see if you can find one that you can get along better with. That said most psychiatrists are going to prescribe some sort of med: that is their training. However some are more tolerant and willing to try something new if you don't like the current prescription.
General thoughts: CBT and other talk therapies are great although it can be hard to find publicly funded psychologists and social workers if you aren't already hooked up with a hospital or specific program. They are especially effective alone with mild and situational depression and anxiety.
In my experience moderate and severe forms of depression/anxiety/bipolar or illnesses which involve delusions (ie schizophrenia) will almost certainly require some sort of medication in addition to talk therapy. Sometimes our biology throws us a curveball like it has for Neochu. Everyone is different and there is no one size fits all solution. In some cases there are no good solutions and one can only hope that something helpful will come out. I am glad Neochu has found a supportive GP. It can make a world of difference to find someone to step up to the plate for you.
I don't mind trying meds----but at least find out a bit about the patient first. I know whats wrong----at least I think I do. I just wanted a professional opinion.

CBT is considered best practice. The MSW's in our area do it all the time. Funded provincially, too. -- Need-based health care not greed-based health care.
reply to Rifleman What you're saying makes sense and you're certainly not the first to feel the doc didn't take enough time to get to know you.
I've known some people who go through a couple of doctors until they find a good match. It's worth the effort to try and get a second referral to a second doc if things don't work out with the first.
