 Yay speeds!
I bought a Zoom 5341J modem earlier today and set it up at my dad's house. Using the instructions MediacomChad posted here, I was able to get it activated.
It's currently bonding four downstream channels/one upstream channel, and getting great speeds. One thing that concerns me is the signal strength of the downstream channels. They appear to be very high, and varying quite a bit between the weakest and strongest ones.
I purchased an 8 dB forward path attenuator from here to help with the issue, but it hasn't arrived yet. Even then, I see it more as a band-aid rather than a more proper fix. A few months ago, a Mediacom tech came out and threw on an 8 dB overall attenuator. That knocked the downstream signals down, but pushed the upstream out of spec, resulting in them being knocked offline later.
I'm not sure what Mediacom's official stance is regarding acceptable signals (I'm used to Comcast's recommendations: +/- 10 dBmV or less for down, 3 dBmV or less variance between channels), but the levels listed in the forum FAQ appear to be out of date and more for DOCSIS 1.0/lower order modulations than anything newer. That's why I wanted to check here and hopefully get something a bit more official. -- KI6RIT |
