Re: Cat5/Cat6...... Phone/DSL install

Ok guys,here's the update.

I spent the last 45 mins with the ATT guy explaining to him about what I wanted and the issues with the NID wiring. He agreed that the wiring was WRONG. REALLY!

He said the problem is ATT keeps sending out a repair TECH(which he was,it was actually a good thing,I'll explain in a minute) and not a service tech who has the correct NID and the DSL splitter on his truck.I actually watched him schedule an appointment for tomorrow morning for the guy to put in a new NID and splitter and to replace my wire.Wasn't expecting the wire part.Don't know which wire though.

Now back to it being a good thing they sent him.He told me that I was getting line errors on my line due to a bad splice. He said that the line is on a bridge tap that goes absolutely nowhere taking my bandwidth.Good to know that I'm paying for DSL that feeds into nowhere.Hmmm, wonder why the others didn't notice or mention this. That would explain why my speeds jump all over the place I guess. I guess that would explain the noise on my lines at times.

He also mentioned that most new Uverse customer get a new NID installed without even requesting it. I guess I wasn't part of that most group.

Anyways,we will see what happens while I am at work tomorrow.Would be nice if he shows up before I have to leave for work.

Sounds like you are making progress.

Bridged taps are very common. The circuit going down the road that your drop is tapped off of may continue thousands of feet. The extra conductor length has minimal effect on voice but represents extra circuit length and causes reflections on DSL. Normally bridged taps are not removed on residential service due to the cost of a truck roll. Nice you are getting that done as well as a new NID and splitter.

Let us know how things turn out tomorrow.

This guy seemed to actually know what he was doing and talking about. He was the one that mentioned the bridge tap.He could have just kept quiet about it. As for progress,I hope so.

I'll update after I get home from work tomorrow.

This has been my experience with Bellsouth / AT&T. There is only one guy that really knows what he is doing. The rest are near clueless.

Everyone I have talked to said they went through the same thing; multiple service calls until you happen to get the right guy.

Heck took a month to get my DSL provisioned right.

I can't believe it's taken three truck rolls to get a fucking Keptel replaced. Somebody should be fired.
That's a 10 minute job, and every truck should have plenty of NWIs on it.

Obviously, you have not dealt with BellSouth (now AT&T).

Like I said, this is SOP for the Death Star.

If you'll look at my "about me" page, you'll see that I am "somewhat" familiar with AT&T practices . Even now, where quality is not a concern for them anymore, 3 truck rolls for a measly NWI is ridiculous. This should have been handled by the first guy. The "real" cost of a truck roll is around $110 just to have a man show up for an hour (what it costs the company). I hate to see AT&T pissing away my pittance of a pension.

This is the south. It is Bellsouth trucks and people with AT&T logos pasted over them. This goes back a long time before AT&T took over.

Years ago I had several friends who worked for AT&T and I can assure you the quality of the workers then was not like the crap they evidently pick up off the street and put to work with no formal training or work rules.

I deal with at&t as little as possible, but we have circuits and phone lines from them at work. My experience has been decent, once the tech actually shows up. The headache for me comes from dealing with the automated systems over the phone. My PRI circuit ID is 29 characters, and the stupid computer never understands half of it!
I think they schedule these guys too closely so it's impossible to make the promised time commitment.
I will say that each time a tech has been out, they worked to fix the problems and make sure we did not have them again.

Well,I come home and find that ABSOLUTELY nothing had been done. I called the guy from last night and I haven't received a call back.
The funny thing is I got a call from ATT wanting to know how my new Uverse service was a few minutes ago. He said that the ticket had been closed.I just laughed and said RIGHT! He wanted to know what the problem was,so I let him have it.He just listened and after was all said and done said he would try to get someone out here tonight,I laughed again. I told him that I have been going through this crap for a few days now and didn't really give a damn if it was fixed or not now.
MY home town has their own Cable,Phone and Cable Internet,so I'm going up there to see what kind of speeds I can get. I fthey fix it fine,if not oh well.I'll cancel all my services that I have had with them for the last ten years and never look back.

Got a phone call from ATT letting me know that the Bridge tap was removed. I guess I will just take their word for it,since I don't know if there is actually a way to tell. Here's some stats at the moment..

Downstream Upstream
SN Margin (dB) 8.1 16.3
Line Attenuation (dB) 52.5 34.0
Output Power(dBm) 17.2 6.3
Errored Seconds 0 0
Loss of Signal 0 0
Loss of Frame 0 0
FEC Errors 7892 0
CRC Errors 0 0

Downstream Sync Rate (kbps) 3005
Upstream Sync Rate (kbps) 509

My speed tests are not testing very good at the moment though.

Anyways the guy on the phone is going to dispatch another tech in the morning to replace the NID.Heard that before!! I told them if they don't, they can cancel my services.I can't remember in the 10yrs with them where I have had this much of a hassle getting something done.

Tomorrow you can come home to your neighbors having their NID replaced and DSL working even tho they never ordered it.

I feel your pain and frustration. I kicked all AT&T services to the curb about 2 years ago, couldn't be happier. I waited over 2 months to get a line buried (kept sending the "wrong" people) out, I got tired of it (and the useless phone calls to CS) and buried it my damn self (supposed to have received a $30 credit for that), yeah, that never happened either. What a shocker.

As much as I'd hate it, I'd do without before having AT&T services for anything. If you have a choice, go for it, it can't be any worse.

I got another call this morning that a tech would be here to install the NID sometime today. I told him that I will believe it when I see a new box.

you have got to watch that tech do it right and ask him to show the stuff....if not, tell him to go away and not waste your time.

I have to go to work today,so I hope he comes before I leave. If not,I'll take the picture of yours and tape it to the old box. Maybe he will know what to do then.
