 | Encapsulation Test? I'm trying to troubleshoot my current connection issues on my own to narrow the problem down as CL is of little help and it will be a few weeks before I can get a new service. In the PK5001Z modem configuration pages they have a Diagnostics Test where I am failing the encapsulation test. I'm not finding much at all as to what that even is--any ideas and is it pertinent?
Thanks! |

It may have something to do with the ATM layer, because your data has to be encapsulated in an ATM cell. Then there would be PPP encapsulation if you have PPPoE. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

 | reply to th3orydot I get the same result from the diagnostic test.
Encapsulation Type: ATM
Encapsulation Test: FAIL
Everything else looks good. I've had issues on and off for a year or 2 with huge lag spikes while gaming and most recently random disconnects after a modem switch(recommended to fix my issues). I live in a small town and have no high speed options. DSL with Century Link or cable (horrible)....without mentioning dial-up. The company keeps sending a tech out to look at it who shows up in the middle of the day and leaves a note on my door that says "all good". Most of the lag issues are in the evening, roughly 8-11pm. This is the time I refer to as the "Social Media Hour". |

 | reply to th3orydot Asked their tech support about this test. All 3 people I asked had no idea what it was. |

Here's just one site....do a find on the Cisco page below for "encapsulation" and about half way down the page it describes why the error occurs and provides another link on possible fixes.

Or ATM encapsulation ...

Admittedly I don't know enough to be able to describe each, how they work, and so forth. But I believe that an ATM encapsulation failure means that the Ethernet link between PC and modem can be working (user can access the modem GUI and see the diagnostic page), but the ATM link between the DSLAM and the aggregation router is failing (modem can't communicate with the aggregation).
I don't have the same model of modem as the OP, but here is my diagnostic page:
 Pace 4111N-030 diagnostic page.
I expect wayjac can explain it better; and correct me if I am in error. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

 | So if the test is failing that could explain constant drops/disconnects in my service? |
