Swapping Router at FiOS Store

I have a Actiontec MI424-WR Rev C router and I'm only getting around 10 Mbps download speeds over wifi. I was going to go to a local Verizon FiOS store and try to see if they would be willing to give me a newer model.

Do I have to unhook my current router and take it with me or will I be able to mail it back later?

I don't want to have to unhook my current router if I don't get lucky and have to reinstall it when I get back.

Anyone have any experience of getting a new router at a store?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

I would request a tech to come to my house, explain the issue and they should have a new router on the truck which they can swap out for your old one. I went through going to Fios store and they said to call for home service. The tech's are the only ones having the latest (new) routers. If you call customer service they will send a refurbished unit.

Thanks for the advice. So what would be considered a "reasonable" speed to my PS3 via wifi? I have the 75/35 service.

I have 35/35 and get better than that down load.

I would expect at least 75000 download unless there were problems with overall service at that time.

Chris, make sure your lan card isnt restricted to 10Mbps, at some point, mine was changed t0 10/10, a few clicks and I was back to normal.

OP stated "over wifi". Depending on distance, interference, non-N, etc you'll prob never get 75/35 over wifi. If you get a wireless N router and if your PS3 supports wireless N, you might get it or come close.

At my house on wireless G, I'm lucky if I get over 20Mbps. On my wireless N network (5Ghz) I can get full/decent speeds as long as I am not too far away from the router. I have 75/35. I have 3 xbox360's and all are connected via hardwire/CAT6.

I can hit 150Mb/s on the speed tests over wireless through my Asus RT-N56U router and RT-N56U in AP mode. I'm on the 150/65 tier.
Although I can't hit the 155Mb/s that I can when using a wired connecion. But 150Mb/s is good enough. It's no issue if you have the proper wireless equipment and have it setup properly.

I had to test multiple wireless channels to find one that gave me those faster speeds.

But getting 75Mb/s throughput over wireless was never an issue. Even when using my old Dlink DAP-1522 APs/Bridges.

The PS3 is 802.11g, its theoretical maximum is about 24mbs due to forward error correction. There is no "proper wireless equipment" one could connect with the PS3's wireless to get faster than the above listed speeds

Just Google PS3 wireless, 10mbs seem very common real worlds connection speed for that console

My PS3 is only reporting about 6 Mbps download speed from my Actiontec Rev C. The YouTube app suffers from constant buffering. I tried switch wifi channels, but speeds get worse.

Is getting a newer Actiontec likely to help? I'm concerned that the reduced range of the newest version might make things worse.

You likely don't have a router issue, you have a wireless distance issue. Simplest thing to do is move the router closer to where the PS3 is located, the router can hang off any coax outlet in the house.

Another cause for slowdowns could be you have other wireless devices, like other computers and they are using part of the bandwidth

You can also have a second MOCA device , most use an old Actiontec as a LAN bridge and then you can run wired from the PS3 to the second Actiontec ( the FIOS FAQ has many options )

Even if you have Verizon ship you another actiontec, I would assume it would be revE or above
