the verizon line below CV's line is about 4 feet from the ground at its lowest point, the neighbor is using a tree branch to keep it high enough from their driveway so they can exit/enter their vehicles.
im counting the days how long it will stay like this.. :D

It could be they are working on something. a couple of days ago we went down at work so I called power to learn. They stated they were working on replacing the coax. a lot of the coax got stretched by the storm (trees on the wires and other thigns) and that stretched wire causes all sorts of signal problems.

So it is probably cablevision doing work in your area.

No, we can complain about the power loss. My sister's power wasn't restored until 14 days after the storm. JCP&L tries to give LIPA a run for its money.

You also have to remember that regarding the power outage numbers, we still have a heck of a lot of people with no power - they are just no longer being counted. JCP&L removed the barrier island outage numbers from their counts. Their current outage map shows 105 customers without power in Toms River Township. Now, TRT includes many of the beach communities on the barrier island. None of them have any electric, gas, water or sewer utilities working. We're talking thousands and thousands of homes, but they are not being included in the count. They've got only 10 customers listed as being out of power in Brick Township, which also has homes damaged on the barrier island, for which there also is no utility service.

But given the amount of water and wind damage that occurred, I think the utility companies have done a herculean job trying to get their grids up as fast as they have done. You have to remember that some of the reasons for the delays has been that they simply didn't have enough new poles and transformers to replace the ones destroyed. During the hurricane I looked out the window and saw constant flashes in the air, which I realized was the transformers blowing up. This storm didn't just take down the wires - it took down everything.

We're already charged more money per KW/h than most states in the country; they could at least provide service enough to justify the high price they charge in the first place.

Some substations were damaged. One was so bad that they had to rebuild the whole facility. Most likely why power was out in underground developments (if there were no severed lines feeding into the area).

All in all though, with Christie praising JCP&L sadly I don't think the BPU will do anything meaningful. I've been complaining to the BPU, my mayor of Jefferson Township, elected reps....nothing. And if this storm doesn't make the ass kissers stop and see what's going on (payoffs), I don't know what will....a worse storm or NJ being wiped off the map.

Remind me to move into a more compacted, richer development so my services get restored faster. We were one of the last ones to get things restored in my county. (Specifically, for my township (Mount Olive), our mayor was flipping out on the radio (WRNJ) because of how long things were taking to be restored. He can stay.)

I think the main cause of the delay was the fact that VERIZON OWNS POLES. There was a dispute between JCP&L and Verizon for days and a massive lack of communication between both companies and the mayors/governor. All the poles on my street (and half on the connecting road) belong to Verizon. Eventually, after a full week of being without power, I assume JCP&L gave an order to just go put in a new pole regardless of Verizon's ownership, as they left the old damaged pole there and just transferred the plate attached to it. Wish that was done earlier; so much time spent waiting for nothing. I saw at most 10 Verizon trucks in my township in the 12 days we were without power, and none were near my residence.

For anyone who wants to hear about the damages, I might post some pics. Many roads were blocked for days, even over a week. Trees on roads, trees on houses, lines down everywhere; it was a disaster. Lucked out on a generator on day 3, but had to drive to PA to get gas. Generator blew up 5 days later (it was a Generac, ridiculous!). Family picked up a friend's and I found my own cheap (financially) one that could power our mini-fridge, well pump, some lights and most importantly, my PC! (minor sarcasm)

Our (NJ's) power grid might be the worst in the entire nation. Thanks for de-regulating things! I doubt they're even going to finally upgrade the archaic infrastructure now. Poles snapped just because of how damn old they were, it was disgusting to see.

Oh well, ranted enough here; hope to see things improved in the future. Maybe Verizon will finally wire FiOS down my street with the repairs, but I doubt it. *sigh*

But as others have said, this in only true if you don't have fiber cuts. Fiber cuts take longer to restore.

But if the cable is cut you rarely need to 'worry' on a per customer base (unless you have an above ground drop)... On Fibre if it get's cut you got to make sure your strand is fixed properly... Over time the customer effort to get an outage fixed on cable is lower compared to FIOS (including time of calling in the outage, needing to stay home etc...)

Agreed. I can only go based on my observations in my area. We used to have cable during long outages, but not any more. I can't completely say whether or not there was a physical problem (cut line, etc..) or not but for my area the fact for the last year has been that the cable service goes up and down with the power, and fios service persists throughout. I spoke to a few others in my area who switched in the past year and they have nothing but good things to say. Since I telecommute for an internet based company its more convenient for me to have service then not, so thats a heavy factor in my decision.

Of course, I could get the new service installed next week and then it will go out for the first time in the area�€� that would follow my usual luck ;)

During these big storms, it's several days before we see any trucks from the electric or phone utilities, but Optimum is always there right from Day 1. If they could teach these Optimum people to work on power lines, I think we'd get our power back a lot faster.

Not universally true. Was your post was an attempt at humor or were you stating in your area you do not believe generators are used to power Optical Nodes?
