My power cable is shredding

I have a 2010 MacBook Air that I bought in May 2011. Recently, a section of the power adapter cable's insulation developed tears, and soon was coming apart. It was in the area that runs parallel to the back of the computer when I route it off the right side; I wondered if it was due to rubbing against the sharp edges of the case. I taped it up, first with electrical tape and then duct tape, and it seems to be holding up. But now, only a few weeks later, I'm getting tearing in a new location, just below the magsafe connector.

Is anyone else seeing this kind of problem? I don't think my cable has been subjected to any unusual conditions, although it's had fairly hard use.

I'm having that problem also, with a Macbook pro that my daughter uses in college. I bought a new power supply, and it's starting to do the same thing. I ended up taping the original one from one end to the other. Very irritating.

Apple uses the cheapest adapters from any brand, ever for anything.

If you get a Lenovo or a Dell, you get a tank track as a power adapter. Apple gives you something inspired by a paddle ball.

A winterfresh gum wrapper has an overall better durability than the Apple power brick.

I wonder what I'm doing differently... there are three in the house (one "T" shaped and two where the connector comes out perpendicular to the cable) and they're all fine.

We have four Macbook power supplies. The two older model ones are doing fine, one dating back to 2008. The two newer ones are the ones shredding. We're not doing anything differently, as evidenced by the two older supplies, which still get steady use by the same users in the same way. The newest one dates back to July, so I am going to take it to the Apple store to see about warranty.

Apple has gone cheap on their cables the past few years. The iPod/iPhone cables had strain reliefs on the ends until the iPhone 3G came out. The newer ones get frayed after a few months/years.

That could very well be why I haven't run into this - I tend to use my older one more.
