There are tons of open source mail servers for linux. Any chance having a small linux machine or build a virtual linux machine on top of windows?

Also did you look here? »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Co ··· _servers

I live in an apartment with very limited space. I got one big gaming pc and a server. My server runs 2008 R2 as the main os and I got hyper v that runs another server 2008 R2 as a virtual OS. I don't mine running a virutal linux os but hyper v doesn't support the common linux OS. It's just more work to try and find another visualization platform and so on just to run a mail server. Thanks for the link with all the mail servers for windows, I'll do some research on them.

I have Ubuntu running as a VM under Hyper-V just fine. It's most definitely supported. Not sure if by "common linux OS" you're perhaps referring to something else more specific.
