[TWC] buying a modem.. docsis3 modem for std-level service
Is there a problem with me buying a modem on the turbo/extreme list of devices if I only have standard service? I expect the hardware to be backward compatible.. but didn't know if they would some stupid rule in place about using only a particular class of device for a class of service. I'd like to future-proof as much as I can (as my current li'l 10+-year-old sb4100 can attest).

There's nothing wrong with getting a DOCSIS 3.0 modem for Standard service, especially if they do boost it to 15Mbps/1? Mbps. You might be looked at funny getting one for 1/1 or 3/1 service (the light tiers Time Warner has at least in this and a few other areas) but definitely not Standard.
Only thing you lose? PowerBoost. No big deal of course.
Here, Power Boost is not on 15/1 even on a DOCSIS 2 modem. Because of this 10/1 is a MUCH better deal as Power Boost does matter at these low speeds. I had 10/1 for years and got 15/1 just before Turbo was killed on Aug 1. 15/1 is not worth the extra $10 a month because of no Power Boost. (Of course, now it will be standard tier so I should not have to pay the extra $10 a month and, who knows, maybe Power Boost will be brought back for 15/1 since it will be Standard tier now.
You may benefit from DOCSIS 3 modem on DOCSIS 2 but currently the only approved one, Surfboard 6141 (unless you want the poorly rated Surfboard that is wireless), is quite expensive because of the sudden demand for it and you can't find one except at Amazon. I will pay the monthly rental fee until the price comes down on the 6141 and it is more widely available.

there is no problem.
advantage on d3 modem 6ch upstream 4ch downstream over 1ch
The SB6141 can bond 8 channels downstream and 4 channels upstream. Worse case is that you only use one channel for each. No harm and it does allow you to upgrade to D3 connections (30+ down) in the future.
