The approved TWC modems are:

For Turbo, Extreme, and Ultimate Service:
Motorola SB6141 or SBG6580.

For Lite, Basic, and Standard:
Motorola SB5101, SB5101U, or SBG901

Only the SBG6580 & SBG901 are routers/cable modems.

I didn't need a router/modem but I bought a used SB5101U off Ebay for $24 versus new @ $55-$60. I just bought one that said they refurbished and at least tested the modem. You might also be able to find router/modems on Amazon via Amazon Marketplace. The ones sold there list the condition of the modem.

SB5101U is just a cable modem. Only the SGB901 is a router/modem approved by Motorola for standard and below tier.

SBG901 is a router w/cable modem(1 physical device). Only the SBG901 is a DOCSIS 2.0 device approved by TWC. I have no other recommendations other than what is approved by TWC. Routers can be wireless or not and combined with a cable modem(1 physical device) or not(2 physical devices - router & cable modem). You can use the SB5101U cable modems with many wireless routers but you are insisting on a single physical device having both a router function and a cable modem function. TWC has approved only the SBG901 router w/cable modem(one physical device) that is a DOCSIS 2.0 device.

hi mathfaster.. i called TWC and they said that the SB5101U is compatiable with them. i'll look into possibly buying it off ebay. but if its ok with you, can you look at the link below that shows a list of wireless cable modems that are compatible with TWC? can you please tell me which are the cheapest ones? i'd greatly appreciate it.. thanks!!!

The SB5101U WILL NOT WORK for you. It is not a WiFi router.

SBG901, period.

Also note the SBG6580 can do Wireless B/G/N. SBG901 can only do B/G.

It is DOCSIS 3.0 but backward compatible. Assume TW wouldn't have issues hooking it up for standard service. If you upgrade you are already covered.

Nice list of modems and routers w/modems but not what is approved for purchase by TWC. What do you have now? Just buy that if it is a router w/cable modem and you are currently a TWC customer and hope TWC will provision that router w/cable modem. Your risk. You should read some of the other threads that talk about buying your own modem for TWC and the threads that talk about the upcoming/current fees for leasing a TWC modem or router w/cable modem. Lot of helpful information in those threads. You are also going to need to be able to setup your wireless network if you buy your own wireless modem w/cable modem.

BTW, a router is not a cable modem and a cable modem is not a router so you cannot just buy a SB5101U which is solely a cable modem and does not have router functionality. In simplistic terms, a router routes and a cable modem modulates/demodulates(hence, mo(dem) for short). They are not interchangeable. Both have different functions. The SBG901 and SBG6580 are the only APPROVED devices that have both router and cable modem functionality combined into one device. The router in both provides wireless connectivity.

I got the SBG901, and it's working out fine for me. I have Standard internet and live in a studio apartment, so YMMV if on another speed plan or big house and/or want backyard access.
