Hot/burnt electronics are fairly obvious (at least to someone that has worked with electronic hardware).

yep my guess it's 1 & 2
I broke in my sub by running some low I think 20 hz signal to it at a decent volume after about 10 min or so I made enough heat to get the smell and after that no more.
