You can't clone a 256G drive onto a 128G one. But you can recursively copy all files while preserving their attributes, and this is exactly what cp -a is for.

That does not help with making the drive bootable.

That what the link I posted does.

1. Copy drive partitions preserving permissions and links.
2. Install grub.

As I have a PC that has been running linux since '96, I have done it many times over the years. Went from IDE to SCSI to SATA drives.
