Razer Mouse Software Requires Internet? Watches You ...

"A Techdirt article looks at issues users are having with new Razer Naga mice, as there are complaints that its Synapse 2.0 software requires an Internet connection the first time it's used, leading to the inevitable story of someone who could not use his new mouse because the authentication servers were down (thanks Brandon). They note a Facebook explanation from Razer saying this is not the case, and that the mouse will work out of the box, and the software requiring the Internet includes added functionality to save profiles in the cloud (actually saying this reduces the cost of mice, which apparently were requiring ever-more flash memory for the convenience of portable settings). Techdirt refutes the claim that the mice "work perfectly well out of the box without Synapse 2.0," and the forum post that set all this in motion also notes that the Privacy Policy for this software seems surprisingly nosey: ..."

The software is stupid. It requires you to create a Razer account and log-in every time you reboot to access your settings.

I ended up uninstalling the Synapse software because it was such a hassle, and I should not need an account online to use the extra features the Naga mouse has.

As of now, my Naga is a very expensive five-button mouse. I will probably throw it in a box and go back to a Logitech.

As someone on Reddit said, "when your mouse requires an internet connection to completely function, you are doing the Cloud thing wrong."

Well, at least Razer's "privacy" policy is rather open about what they do:

quote:
By using Razer Synapse 2.0 (“Synapse”), the Subscriber agrees that Razer may collect aggregate information, individual information, and personally identifiable information. Razer may share aggregate information and individual information with other parties. Razer shall not share personally identifiable information with other parties, except as described in the policy below.
..
In some situations, personally identifiable information the Subscriber inputs in connection with Synapse may be made searchable or otherwise available to other Subscribers (such as in certain public functions).
..
Collection of personally identifiable information may be out-sourced to associates under agreement with Razer. These associates may adhere to their own set of privacy policies.
..
I particularly like their last point that a user's personally identifying information can be outsourced to others (who are unknown to the users) - and who can then do whatever they want with it by simply having their own wide-open policy.

So does anyone want to buy a lovingly used Razer Naga? At least it can sit there and look sexy!

It's billed as an MMO (massively multiplayer online) mouse, where the 1-12 buttons correspond to the 1-= buttons so you can use your abilities without taking your hand off the mouse.

I quickly found out the button placement was horrible and hard to use without inadvertently moving the mouse.

Which button initiates self destruct on that thing?
I prefer IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0. It's the ONLY mouse I'll use.

Sounds like someone tried to sneak in spyware so they can sell more ads depending on how you program your buttons and/or your surfing habits.

That or they REALLY up the programming to make the account mandatory upon install, rather than keeping it as an option.

I finally balked and purchased outside of M$ this time. Mainly as I didn't have the selection I wanted when I went to replace my setup.

Personally I like the MS hardware too. Its very good quality for its price. Though they install the software via download too as well, and make you register the product via serial number online.

I went with the Logitech Cordless M705 kit though this time because it was on sale too. I find it comparable to the 3000 series to MS though I don't have the keyboard and mouse button functionality (one click magnifier for example).

12 button mice are insane. Even with some of the elite MMO players I know don't do one handed gaming.

Besides the actions per minute rates are going to be higher with a touchscreen or with both keyboard or mouse together (exponentially higher). That many buttons with no texture or other feedback to know which one is which increases your confusion.

I love my Microsoft Sidewinder X6 keyboard. They discontinued it, but the X4 is still available. I've built two rigs for relatives with the X4, and they both love them. Not bad for a non-mechanical keyboard.

Yeah, for one Somali dollar.

If not, then I will stick with my old generic USB and PS/2 three button mice.
