You need a digital audio to analog audio converter; I had to get one for my set-up as well, as I still have an old sound system with only analog input for my audio.

This is the one that I bought.

Works like a charm. You can't see it in the picture on Amazon, but there are two RCA analog outputs on the other side of that little black box.

You will also need a digital Coax cable like this...

And a 3.5mm female stereo to RCA jack adapter like this...

Then you can hook up your FiOS via HDMI, your Apple via HDMI, and not have to do the old swicharoo thing that you are thinking of.

FiOS-->TV (using HDMI)
Apple TV-->TV (using HDMI)

For Audio
TV-->Digital Coax-->Converter-->RCA-to-3.5mm female adapter-->Speaker input

That will get you what you need.

I could skip the RCA-to-3.5mm cable in my set up, since my old sound system had auxiliary RCA inputs, I just needed a standard set of RCA cables for that final step.

You'll need an analog audio switching box such as this: »www.radioshack.com/product/index···setBasic
Just use it for switching the audio and don't worry about the video (I'd assume the Apple box has HDMI, if it doesn't then pass the video through it too).

So
Receiver -----HDMI---->TV
Receiver -----Analog Audio----> switch

Media device ------HDMI----->TV or if unavailable,
(Media device -----analog video---->TV)
Media device ------Analog audio---->switch

Switch -----analog audio----->speakers

You'll also need a RCA male to jack female adapter cable.

It probably doesn't, but check to see if your TV has an analog audio out. If it does, it should be as simple as connecting your FiOS STB and the AppleTV into the TV, then connecting the speakers to the TV.

If the TV doesn't have an analog audio out, then you would need something like this to switch between the two (use only the audio portion of the switch):

Or, probably a more sensible thing to do, acquire a speaker system with digital input. Either a PC speaker system that has digital input compatible with the digital output of your TV (optical or coaxial), or purchase a home-theatre-in-a-box (cheaper than buying all separate receiver + speakers).

I have a random Logitech 2.1 speaker system mainly used for a computer where only one channel works hooked into the back of the FiOS thingie.

I also want to hookup an Apple TV to this for Netflix.

How can I make this whole thing not stupid?

What do I need? A real people receiver and real people speakers? I don't want to dump too much money into this.
