[OOL] Can receive, but cannot send email in Outlook 2010

Getting an error in Outlook, and mail is stuck in my Outbox - "None of the supporting authentication methods supported by this client are supported by the server". Haven't changed anything regarding my email account recently...

Sometimes AV software will change settings on its own. Make sure your outbound email settings are as follows:

server name: mail.optimum.net (or mail.optonline.net)
port: 587
authentication: same ID/pwd as incoming
SSL: No

Or you can/may use the following:
port: 25
authentication: none
SSL: No

If those settings match, delete anything in your outbox & retest.

That'd be port 587. Which, despite having been available for some years, is not a documented feature.

My bad, typo. Thanks for the catch.

supposedly the mail.optonline.net doesn't work any longer, must be mail.optimum.net.

I was having trouble sending large messages yesterday. It seems to have resolved itself. Must have been a Cablevision problem.

C:\Documents and Settings\frdrizzt>nslookup mail.optimum.net 8.8.8.8
Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8

Non-authoritative answer:

They resolve to the same IP, so they both will work. The optonline.net might not be supported by reps.

I prefer actual connection attempts over 'nslookup' for testing SMTP servers:
C:\Dig>telnet mail.optonline.net 587
Connecting To mail.optonline.net...
220 mta2.srv.hcvlny.cv.net -- Server ESMTP (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.2
-8.04 (built Feb 28 2007))
quit
221 2.3.0 Bye received. Goodbye.

Connection to host lost.
